Default Help: noise that can't be good!!!

Help. This happened like 2 days ago. There is a noise coming from the engine bay. It does not always happen. It started like a sqeeky wheel when is idleing, high pitched, with cycles during. Today, it got really loud when I was driving, It turned into a high pitch squeal. The high pitch noise sounds makes it sound like a junker car. It seemed to occur sporatically in first a second gear, when I accelerate from a stop. Pushing in the clutch makes it go away temporarily so I am not sure if that is just coincidence or not? It sounds like a pulley maybe engageing or disengageing? But I don't know what it is... I know it is hard to Diagnose anything from just a sound that I describe, but the sound is really loud, and very similar to the sound of scratching a chalkboard. thanks, any help is appreciated.

It's either a accessory belt, or it could be the hamsters powering your engine have gas. Feed them beans recently?

Start the car, stick your head under the hood, rev it by tugging on the throttle cable, and see if you can pinpoint the noise. Get a video too, those are fun.

Are your belts tight? Thats the only thing I can think of.

It can be so many things. Your best bet is to try to pinpoint the origin of the noise. High pitched squeels is a symptom for a couple of problems.

Most probably a loose/squeaky belt or a bad accessory bearing. Try tightening the belts or spraying anti-slip on them first and see what happens.

My loud squeaks have always been metel vs metel on my GSR. The heat shields were the first cause of this. The last one was the bracket the holds the header down near the connection to the cat.

I would bet one of these items is your source.

Belts could be a cause if they are old.

yeah, metal...I know it can be so many things, I don't believe it is the header though, it makes a cycling type noise. It's hard to isolate because it doesn't always make the noise when the car is stopped or idleing, it makes it when I am starting to move. I am begining to suspect that it is the PS belt, or something related to steering. I noticed it when away when I had the wheels straight. Sorry I don't have a clip of it, I'll try and see if there is anyway I can get one. I'll look under the hood again later tonight....
On another note, I broke the hood release lever yesterday. It snapped off in my hand, this just gets better and better.

only in motion or while still at a light? my wheel bearings would squeal when in motion, but then again, so does my girlfriend

I don't think it's the wheel bearings. because it had made the noise when it was stopped.
I drove home today, and there was no noise, I don't know what happened... but it will come back, the car likes to taunt me like that...
