registering racecar with ca dmv? or non op?
I am looking into getting a car that will be strictly a track car.
Just wondering how you guys register them? I saw another post talking about green stickers, sorta like ATV's etc. and was also thinking maybe non-op?
Couldn't find anything on the dmv website. So before I sit on hold thought I would ask here...
Thanks In Advance

If it's just a track car, is trailered to/from, and stored off-street, then I don't see a need to register it. CA may differ, but once I started trailering the RX-7, I un-registered and dropped the insurance.
When I transferred the title on my CRX I registered it as non-op, I don't know if this is the legal way. The only other way would be to register as a off highway vechile. This is in CA.
If it never touches a city/state street, then you have to register it as a non-op. Think its $5.
They do this every year, just in case you remove the non-op status and want to put it back on the road.

except in GA where I got nailed Ad Valorm tak 1% of vehicles worth + property tax fees.. It was like $72 when it was all said and done.thats an anual fee . On my SPU car I will not be registering it..

Welcome to California DMV!
I have my track car registered as non-op. I don't know if it's the right thing to do but it's what I have. Also, I put the race car on my insurance plan with miminal coverage which ended up costing less than the multi car discount so it ended up saving me money

i dont believe you will have to pay for anything if you never plan on registering it again. but if you should want to register it, and you didnt pay any fees, then youll pay for all the "late" regustration fees. so if theres any chance itll be registered again, just do the non-op. but make sure either way, its never on the street, even curbside in front of your house, it will be ticketed and towed, even with the non op status.
Well, here...read all the details yourself...

Planned Non-Operation (PNO) Fee (all vehicles, including OHV) (VC §4604)
$16

Doesn't sound like it applies to race cars that aren't flat towed. The vehicle itself isn't being towed, the trailer is being towed. That's my understanding of it.

I did it so I could run it up to my local alignment guy without trailering it.. and it made the insurance company happy..

And I wanted to pay for the insurance.. i had 1 street ITR stolen(granted, out on the east coast).. I have no doubt some people would love to get ahold of my H2 prepped one.. despite it missing the bling interior and ITR Rimzzzz.. insurance allows me to know i'll be compensated should it grow legs and walk away..

I just stopped registering it and did not bother with the non-op. As already stated, if you ever plan to re-register the car, then non op it. I don't ever plan on putting the car anywhere near the street, so I don't think I should have to pay for a non op!
After several years, the vehicle will fall out of the DMV system and the registration will no longer be watched, or have any late fees. But getting the car registered again after that is a PITA.
Simply way to decide is this. If it's NEVER going to see the street again, then bother doing anything!

I talked to the DMV. Even if a car is trailered, it can not be on the road as non-op.
So it seems there is no legit way to register a track car? Seems wierd.
Guess non op and take the chance of getting a ticket. or not register it and take my chances with that.
Thanks for the input guys!

Wait, if you want it on the road then you obviously have to register it, and it can't be registered as a non-op. Non-op means non-operational and it sill makes it illegal to have on public streets, or parking.
If j00 trailer the car and the car does not see the street then there is no point of registering unless you're ever planning on putting it back on the street and registering, in which case j00 should make it non-op in the interim.

believe it or not, it was cheaper for me to insure the car normally and pay the license fees than to buy the race car insurance..

I want to trailer the car to the track, however according to the DMV this morning, if it is registered as non op, I still could be ticketed for trailering it to an event.
Whether it's on a trailer or driving it can be cited if it is on a public road.

What if it's not registered at all?
