Tranny change for $1300 on a $2500 car? Or junk it?
I have a 93 Honda Civic Sedan EX with 4 spd auto that I've owned since it was new. I now have 184,000 miles on it. Everything works well ,but my tranny is ready to blow. It has a hard time shifting from 1st to 2nd and slips quite a bit when cold. Fluid is honda's latest ATF. Engine has been run on mobil 1 synthetic since new and never has consumed oil and still pulls well. Considering my car is worth probably only about $2000-$2500, is worth it for me to replace my tranny? My fiance's brother is a service manager at a honda dealer and he quoted me $1300 parts & labor for a remanufactured tranny with 2yr/unlimted mile warranty. I called around and the indy shops are charging $1700 for the same warranty. Should I do it? How much more do you think my engine will last? I live on southern ca so rust isn't a problem.
I doubt that it's worth it for you to buy a rebuilt tranny at this point. With the car's actual value that low, I'd say find someone with a good-condition used tranny that will work with your car and then pay a shop to install it. Looking at no more than $1000 total. That or scrap the car...
I paid $1,500 for my rebuilt transmission on my 96 Civic. The only reason I did was cause I couldnt let my "baby" go. It really depends on the sentimental value your car has. Good Luck on whatever you choose to do.
I would suggest trolling around the local performance shops to see if you can pick one up from a swap, they will probably install it for much less than a dealer or repair shop too.

Depends on how much you like the car – I like mine so I am willing to put some money into it. If I didn’t like it I would beat it to the ground and sell it. The above link seems like a good deal if you need a new tranny. I think the average price to install one is around 200.
