Default 4wd not working as its supposed to.

Well I recently sold my 90 4wd wagon to my bro and its having some strange problems. Its a 1990 wagon with a sohc zc with exhaust and nothing else. After playing in the snow one afternoon I noticed its only spinning the tires on the passenger side and somtimes isn't engaging the 4wd at all. Please reply if you have some insight to the 4wd system and can help trouble shoot it. There has been nothing too strange besides a slight clunk from the rear I was thinking maybe the rear diff is due for a fluid change or is low but I have no idea.
