Default auto tranny question

simple problem. simple question.

when i drop down to R or even D4, the car jerks pretty damn hard. not every single time, but a good portion of the time. it doesnt seem to be shifting bad or anything. what could it be?

torque converter, or needs a fluid change would be my guess. Could be a lot of things I don't keep up on my auto trannys because I haven't owned one in 10 years.

Does it only do it when its cold? If so its somewhat normal. My best advice is to change out the fluid. Thats about all you can do with an auto tranny.

complete stop - yes
is the car cold - usually
high idle - yes (usually at startup it jumps to 2000, then slowly drops)

When our '98 is cold, it seems to take an extra second or 2 for the rpms to drop after taking your foot off the gas. (For example backing out of the driveway.)

So does it pretty much get better when the engine's warm?

Engine mounts loose? That could make a bigger jerk when you shift. Without seeing it firsthand it's hard to say how bad it is compared to 'normal'.

It won't hurt to check your tranny fluid. Low level? Smell burnt? Brownish color?

might also be a motor mount. How many miles do you have on the tranny? if you have over 60 or so, if might be beneficial to flush the tranny (unhook the oil lines from the radiator and leave the car running in neutral while dumping fluid in it. It should be a very deep red color, if it looks milky keep flushing it until its clear red.

ohh... also... ALWAYS use honda ATF on a auto Tranny. It is a world of difference

when it warms up it usually gets better. there is 116,xxx on the car and a little less on the tranny (i swapped it out when the original crapped out). and it could be a motor mount. are there bigger aftermarket motor mounts i could get? or at least stronger ones?

Some amount of stronger jerking is normal, since the idle is higher when its cold.

Plus, what I said about waiting an extra second for the rpms to drop after taking your foot off the gas, before you shift. I can't say whether that's it unless I watch you drive.
