HID retrofit question.....are relays necessary or just recommended when wiring ballasts ?

I just ordered my HID kit from another H-T member; the kit is from a lexus IS300 with denso thin ballasts and d2r bulbs that I wll convert to d2s. (3rd member of the HID retrofit club coming soon

Anyway my question is this..I've been doing alot of reading on HIDs, and one thing I come across more often then not; when installing HIDs in a car that came stock with halogens, you should always install relays, to protect your electrical system.
#1. You guys that have HIDs, have you installed relays, and if you have, where should they go (after the bulbs, before the ballasts, etc.).
#2. do you guys you have experience with HID think that it is really necessary to install relays ?
#3. What type of Relay should be installed ?
#4. for cars that come stock halogen, is it true that you should connect the HIDs straight to the battery, instead of runing off of the OEM harnesses ?

relays are used to draw power directly from the battery rather running through the harness. You should have no problem running through harness, but relays are a little better. It would be before the ballast. The relay is the same type used for aftermarket foglights.
the ballasts shouldn't draw anymore power than the stock bulbs but I believe they require more power initially to power up. If your ballast is not firing up then use a relay.

read up brother....this should give you a good idea of diy. the harness will connect to the positive (i think, i forgot its been awhile) and another wire will have to connect to the oem harness so that it can use the relay to start the hid. and yes i recommend using harness instead of your oem. it shouldnt cost you too much, but if your oem wire gets fryed, its gonna cost an arm and a leg.

I alright, I wish I read this thread before installing my HIDs.
I connect the 12v ballast power wires to the headlight wire harness. I turn on the headlights and the HID bulb illuminated for about 3 seconds then went out. At first I thought I blew my bulb or ballast, but I plugged it directly to the battery and it works fine.
So now I'm searching for a blown fuse. I search everywhere but I don't find anything. The weird thing is that the other side of the headlight still has power. So I take the ballast and bulb over to the other side and plug it in. Same thing happened again as the first side. Now none of the headlight wire harnesses have any power.
So is my electrical wiring fried? Am I screwed? Is it too late to get these relays? Should I make a separate switch that draws power straight from the battery? TIA...
