Default blown piston ring worth fixing?

i have a 91 crx si and i got it with the stock engine, i was just wondering if a blown piston ring(the problem that i have been told) is worth fixing. All i know is that there is black smoke when running, and it does seem to run ok for the exception of the black smoke coming out of the exhaust. Should i fix it or just wait for a swap?

Perfrom a compression and leakdown test. Make sure it is a blown piston ring. Usually with blow rings you will burn oil whichwill produce white/blue smoke. Black smoke usually indicates the engine is running very rich.

most definitely. cost more than your car is worth if you cant do it yourself.

swap is most definitely a good choice unless you are on a tight budget.

i drove on an 200K miles engine that consumed around 1 quart of oil every week.
it is possible, and i would repair the engine, A6 are very potential engines.

haven't u ever seen that video on this site (somewhere; don't feel like searching for it.) some pasty white boys from florida drain all the fluids (coolant for sure but i think motor oil too!!!) and let it run bouncing off the rev limiter with a brick on the gas pedal in neutral....i wanna say that the thing stayed alive for like 20 minutes b4 sparks start shooting out the tailpipe and it seized up. i don't think you'll have a problem with it just plain breaking down on u if it's just rings....but as someone else mentioned, i'd do a compression test on it first cuz black smoke doesn't mean a bad ring...might just be really nasty old o2 sensor or some sensor dealing with fuel management.
