Hard Start Hot
Hi guys, newbie here!
'89 LXi. Starts right up when cold, but after some driving time, it's hard to start. Been suggested to replace O2 sensor and check Mass Air Flow.
Q: (O2 Sensors) How many and where (I assume in the engine compartment) located on this model? I checked my auto parts store (online) and they list several ranging from $18-$36. How do I find out the OEM for this?
Q: (Mass Air Flow) What is this? Is it simply the air filter?
Thanks for any help
Terry

Use the proper NGK sparkplugs, and when you go to start the engine turn the key on and wait 3-5 seconds before cranking. The injectors need to have good fuel pressure or they will spit out a dribble insted of a fine mist spray. Also you might want to change the dist. rotor , those TEK brands were always bad about leaking voltage to ground when they got 40-60k miles on them.
That car has no mass air flow sensor, it uses a manifold absolute pressure sensor. I doubt that it is your problem.

could be your main relay also. common failure, and will cause a no-start condition when it's warm out.
when you turn your key to "ON" (don't start it!) do you hear the fuel pump prime for ~3 seconds? try that when it won't start, if you don't hear the pump and do other times, it's your main relay most likely

Once in a great while, a bad TW (water temp) sensor will cause a "no start when hot" condition. It's a variable (with temperature) resistor, and when they get flaky, it could be telling the engine it's cold when in fact it is not. This results in flooding.
BTW, an O2 sensor will not cause a no-start condition. It's function is to supply fuel trim information to the ECU when the engine is running. The engine can run without it.

reading a code 6, which is an ECT sensor. There is no resistance reading when I probe terminal to terminal and ground to terminals. There are two sensors, one with a green wiring harness clip and one that is tan. I've checked for resistance on both and they indicate open.
Am I reading this correctly? What are the resistance values supposed to be on the sensor itself with the engine off?
Thanks

first thing I would check is your main relay anything before 1994 they have a tendency to fail quite often and it always happens when it is hot outside or the car is hot. quick test. Smack it really hard and if the car starts, you found the problem.
