Default Bad gas mileage

My son has a 96 civic and gets about 1/3 the gas mileage he should. WHat do you
recommend, taking in for a tune-up? or what can he do on his own to improve it? This week he filled tank and at 1/2 tank only 85 miles.........

how many miles are on the motor? consider chaning both 02 sensors whereas they can cause the worsest gas milage if not replaced

tell your son, to stop accelrating so fast, and trying to impress the ladys, And after that, check your fuel filter, and o2 sensor, what kind of car and motor is your son drives. how many miles

O2 sensor can affect the mileage by as much as 40%

If you put in 5 gallons and only got 85 miles thats only 17mpg. Holy cow thats crappy. My 1975 Corvette gets better mileage !

Is the motor stock?
I would at least do a compression check to see if the engine is even in decent shape before spending alot of money on it. I would guess its a high mileage car off the bat.

These things come to mind:
Fuel filter
Tire pressures
Clogged / dirty fuel injectors
Cat converter could be clogged (exhaust)
O2 sensor / sensors
spark plugs / wires
dist cap and rotor
Bad rings? (compression check)

could be a stuck brake caliper causing drag too. Most likely its a combo of a few things. Thats really bad mileage.
