Default Cali Emissions Question

I have 93 DX HB, pretty much stock except for 50 state Greddy header, 5 Zigen cat back and 50 state AEM intake.

I took the car months ago and got it tested [ didn't know about pre-testing it at the time ] and failed miserably. Emissions were high, plus my timing was too advanced and at the time I was running an "illegal" intake.

So, since then, I have changed the intake to the AEM, replaced my stock cat with another brand new, replaced the cat back exhaust [after a small accident] and fixed my timing.

1) I think now I will pass the test no problem, but was wondering if anyone knew if I could get a pre-test AFTER I have already taken the real test and failed.

Or if I just have to go back in and do the real test again??

2) Do I have to go back to the same place I failed the first time?

When I took it in the first time, I paid $50 or so already....

and would you only get the FREE retest at the place that tested it the first time???

the only pre-test I'm aware of is usually at the smog test stations that do the repairs. if you tell them you done your own work. I believe they can arrange a pre-test for a price.
my dad's van failed as a gross polluter and took it to that type of smog station. after they did the repairs they pre-tested the van and then sent it to the smog test only station. it passed with flying colors and super clean too.

BTW you don't have to go back to the same station you failed unless you want a free re-test. other then that you can go to any other stations. DMV do have a record of you failing just so you know. So don't be surprise if you have to go to a smog test only station the next time around.

Good deal man...I will definately give the place I went to a ring and try to get the free re-test. Sounds better than paying another $50.

Thanks alot.

what did you fail for? FYI run the car for a few days prior to going to the SMOG station to make sure your cat is working efficently, You can get a smog station to do what we call a PRE-test, so even if you get gross polluter it will not count on DMV's database.

Given your timing was way advanced you prob failed for that reason.

YOu can go to any SMOG station as long as your DMV rewnewal does not state TEST only.

My question though was whether or not I could pre-test after I have already failed. Which I have. Marked as a gross polluter.

It was a test only station I went to and he failed for the things listed above plus being above the limits for the gases they check...which I think is mainly do to my stock cat which had never been changed until recently.

Sounds like people are saying I can get a free re-test at the same place I failed, which is just as good to me as the pre-test.

Plus I did not get a DMV renewal cause I moved to Cali in May 2003, tried to test once and haven't since. But I haven't driven the car also for the last 2 months up until this past week. And she is running fine.

I don't think I will have a problem passing now, just wondering about the free re-test or pre-test.

thanks.
