Default water pump question

i have a 90 civic 1.5 4 speed hatch, i was wondering if the water pump is ran by the drive belt? i've got a bad coolant leak under the timing belt where the water pump should be.. and i'm curious what all i'm gonna have to do to figure out if it's the pump it'self or just the o rings that went bad.. any insight would be appreciated. thanks

Yes its driven by the timing belt. And usually there is a little weep hole in the pump and when it fails it will leak coolant from. If your gonna pull the water pump anyways, just replace it, don't replace just the o ring, it makes no sense to.

Water pump runs on the timing belt. Check your thremostat before going after the pump.

The thermostat is on the other side of the engine, so how could it be the thermostat ?

Unfortunately, you are going to have to remove your timing belt to remove your water pump. So if you're at all due for a t-belt change, consider replacing those at the same time.

Make sure you have a good manual.

Good = Helm

Good does not = Haynes, Chilton, your friend who used to own a honda, running back and forth to the computer to ask us

And don't feel bad. You're not alone. I've got a failing water pump on my '91 CRX DX, too. Sumbitch has under 20k miles on a brand new pump. I have to say I'm a little disappointed...

Still, this is the very first (and ONLY, so far) glitch of any kind I've had on the car in over 20,000 miles. Hard to complain about a 15-year-old car that's that solid!

I've got new Honda water pump, timing belt, and tensioner going in soon.
