highflow catalytic converter?
hey every1 yesterday i went ot the exuast shop looking for a highflow cat to purchase. the owner asked me what car i have and told me i should save my money.. i was sorta amazed hon since he was soest. i asked him why and he told me there is really no point to buying a high flow cat. then he took me in his shop and showed me a stock cat and a suposedly high flow cat and there the same. he told me the reason why they sell them is becuase on older cars the cats were made differntly with tunnels and channels. but on newer cars theyre made much better.. so thanks to him i saved sum money and i just wanted to share sum of this info.... if you guys know of anything diffent i would like to hear it

the thing is..the dude is being honest with you.
the high flow cat will get u a nice yellow cel and letter less back pressure(size matter yes, but most likely you wouldnt even notice a bump in performace).
if you only have bolt on like vafc, intake, catback, header, FPR, dont even bother to get a high flow cat.
turbo then, is another story

AGREED. don't waste your money unless you have some serious performance mods (not bolt ons)
sounds like you found an HONEST shop. that's worth a
in my book.

high flow cats are pretty much a scam (like pulleys, ignition systems, etc) when it comes to most "imports".....though they can be very effective w/ a "built" powertrain, on a stock engine, their performance benifit outweighs the cost (imo).....being a 96, your car has an o2 sensor in the cat, so a testpipe is out of the question.....howerver if you really hate the environment, and you converted to obd1, you could just throw on a short resonator/resonated test pipe in place....then you can destroy the ozone, give die from CO poisoning...but hey, at least since its resonated, itll be less raspy
The straight pipe on my F22B1 gave me 5 whp in my mid and high range. I lost a couple down low under 3000 rpm. Definitely worth the 15$ I spent for the pipe.
Casper electronics makes a plug & play O2 simulator that has worked for me (now going on 6 months) and my check engine light has not come on.
If I were to do it again, I would buy a magnaflow resonator instead of the test pipe to get rid of the rasp. I put one on an ITR and it's wonderful. Amazing sound coupled with an Apex-i N1 and JDM header.

i think 2.5 inch piping is generally the way to go unless you have a turbo setup, and 100 bucks sounds pretty good to me but does it have mardrel bent stainless steel piping??
so far it sounds like youve found a pretty good shop, which is always good

Mandrel bent is the best, the piping keeps the same diameter throughout the bends, whereas a crush bend obviously crushes the pipe inwards, decreasing the diameter. Most shops like Meineke will use a crush bend, even if they tell you its mandrel bent.
The piping will fit with the stock cat.

why is it significant to use 2.25 instead of 2.5 with bolt-ons ? and why would you need to switch to a 2.5 if it is modded more than simple bolt-ons ?
