mini me: timing woes
I completed my mini me recently, but have been unable to get it to start. I finally caved in and took it to a shop to see if they could figure out what was wrong. The guy who checked it out is positive that the timing is off. At TDC the rotor on the dizzy wasn't close at all to where it should have been. Basically it looks like I would have to retard the timing way past where the stock bolt locations are to get it running.
I am running my old obd0 dizzy from the a6 I had in my car before is this the problem or is my valve timing off? If anyone here has experience with an a6/y8 mini me who stayed obd0 please give me some ideas how to deal with this. All I have ever read is that the a6 dizzy bolts straight onto the y8 head, but it now appears to me that may not be so.
I can't really see how the cam could be lined up wrong, the two lines on the cam sprocket are perfectly lined up with the marks on the timing belt cover. Thanks for looking...

You need to make sure your #1 cylinder is at TDC. After that, take off your distributor cap and make sure then ignitor or the thing on the rotor is pointed towards the correct timing. Then place the distributor on the engine.
Make sure your cam and crankshaft are lined up properly. Yes the A6 dizzy does bolt onto the Y8 head. Its the Z6 head you'll have teh cut the arms off of.

Thanks for the response, the thing is what you described is exactly what I have done. Unfortunently when piston #1 is at TDC and the valves on cylinder #1 are at TDC the rotor on the dizzy is not where it should be. Basically when everything is at TDC the ignition timing is way about 25 degrees off. Have you personally had the a6 dizzy on a y8 head?

Not personally. But hopefully you will find the solution to your problem. Maybe its a bad dizzy or what? You said you took it the shop, maybe they can solve it for ya.
Good luck

I'm using the a6 dizzy which was running fine before I did the head swap. I also used a y8 timing belt which fit perfectly. To my knowledge the head has not been worked on at all besides the bent valves I had fixed up before I put the head on. I am definitly considering a cam gear, the thing is from what I can tell its the ignition timing that is off. It looks to me like the cam shaft is lined up correctly. My theory is that the a6 dizzy does not correctly bolt onto the y8 head, but everything I have read says that it does. If I was off on the valve timing by one or two teeth would that cause the ignition timing to be off by as much as it is?
Edit: I'd really like to talk with someone who has done this swap, so if you have experience with it or know someone who has experience with it would be great if they could give me a messege at M3110N on aim.
