Does a better antenna exist for a Civic
See sig.
All the Pioneer head units I have owned got decent reception.... until I put one in my Civic. It was crap before and I thought it was the factory piece. I am now certain it is the stinking Civic antenna! Does a bolt-on upgrade exist?

I hooked up the antenna connector to the the radio. What is the trigger lead? It looks like just a metal antenna with a black piece of plastic at the end. I doubt it is amped.

The next thing I would do is test the ant., you will need a multimeter to do that.
To test, set MM to continuity.......
1- check for continuity between car chassis ground and the small pin on ant. plug, [the part you plug into the HU] there should be NO continuity, [ no connection]
2- check for continuity between car chassis ground and the larger shaft of the ant. plug, there should be FULL continuity, [dead short, the MM should read 0000 or very close]
3- check for continuity between the small pin and the larger shaft of the ant. plug, again there should be NO continuity.
4- check for continuity between the small pin and the mast of the ant. there should be continuity, [ although this may not read as full continuity, it should be close, a resistor is sometimes installed in the ant. lead, but only if the ant. is in the back of the car] if the ant. is up front it should read Full continuity.
If all of these tests are good, so is the ant. if anyone of them are not, you may have a bad ant., if the only test that is bad is #2, [car chassis to larger shaft of ant. plug] if it shows a lot of resistance, [poor ground] you can try and remount the ant. mast, [ undo, clean any rust or corrosion from the base that makes contact with the body of the car] remount and retest

also make sure the antenna is out the whole way. I know so many owners of civic's that only have 1/2 of the antenna pulled out... they don't realize there's a section about as thick as a pencil (well maybe not that big), and another smaller peice inside that slides out of that.
explain yourself....

I pull my antenna out as far as it goes, without breaking, and it has only been about 2 feet long if that, from the resting point. I also see no extentions or other extending antenna parts.

I feel like an *** now!
You guys knew what you were talking about..... check the antenna! I washed my Civic today and pulled extra hard to see if in-fact I had the antenna all the way out.... Took two big tugs but another piece come out
I didn't have it all the way out! I have good reception now!

Nope. Another section that goes deeper..... like another two foot! I see why everyone keeps them in... they look kind of dorky with 4 feet of antenna hanging off the top!
ahh I do see, it is the main tube that sticks out like 2 inches, here I thought that was just a guide and the bottom of the tube... it sure is long... so any metal that you see pulls out quite a bit... for anyone who was confused as I was
