Default motor blows smoke after 5200rpm

Well i was on the freeway and as i passed 5200rpm i blew massive blue/ grey smoke, then it fadded away as i dropped underneath 5200rpm. Motor makes a ticking sound as if the valves were messed up but im not sure. When the car is cold it sputters. Oh, the car is a 1990 crx si with a b16a

any ideas?

Well 5200 is about when the Vtec kicks in on mine. That shouldn't make that much of a difference though. Did you just recently swap the motor? If so, you could just be burning off whatever sat in the motor for so long. I don't know. Head gasket maybe?

yeah pending on how long you had the motor. it could be lots of things. you might need a valve job. try fuel system cleaner. Just troubleshoot it. Good Luck.

Phones can burn oil? haha just playin.

Where did you get that motor? If it wasn't from an importer then it could have been driven like it was stolen before you put it into your car. I'm betting on the rings.

Also please make sure you have correct amount of oil in the car. I know vtec usually doesnt engage without it, just always good to make sure.

Could be bad rings. Also and more than likely leaking valve stem seals. Blow a little smoke when you first crank it up?

Most first gen. B16's Lost Motion Assemblies go bad after all the motors are like 12+ yrs old. Bad LMA's cause the Vtec lobe rocker to basically flap under the cam when not in VTEC. If the ticks go away when VTEC is engaged that would more than likely be the cause of your ticking.

Maybe your EACV is not wired up correctly or coolant level is low. Timing? maybe? Fuel injector clogged or not getting a signal.

Sounds like the rings or the headgasket to me. Isn't the smoke black when you are running rich?

rings/headgasket is grey/blue.. rich is black. yes

while your changing rings you might as well build the bottom end and throw in some oversized CTR pistons and readjust valves. and stop getitng cheap fuel. lol
