Default chromoly vs. mild steel cage

sorry if this has been discussed before,i've searched and couldn't find and exact comparison.is a chromoly cage safer than a mild steel one, even though it has a thinner wall and weighs less.i heard a mild steel cage in a bad wreck will tend to bend a little,as where a chromoly one will completely break if enough force is there, this is comming from someone who i'd like to prove wrong.tell me what you think, thanks.

Chromoly weighs the same as mild steel. Chromoly is stronger than mild steel though so you can use a thinner wall compared to mild steel and still have the same amount of strength. Mild steel tends to bend while chromoly will just snap in a wreck, causing random objects (read: you) to be skewered.

the only thiing that will bend or break on the cage, is the welds if they are not strong enough, if the steel would break, then i think you need to find some better steel to buy, cause it should never happen.

The mild steel tube in 1 5/8 that is NHRA legal is .120 thick.Chromoly tubing the same size has to be .083.I have bent both sizes by hand.On a 6' rad. And the mild
steel bends like butter compared to the chromoly.I would love bend mild steel tube cages. But I just wouldn't want a car that weighs twice as much.So on a Honda ,I would say no way.Now on a figure 8 car ,Yes.As far as it ripping apart .If its designed wrong or like he ( up above) said welded bad.You might have a problem. On the other hand .I wouldn't want that same person doing my mild steel car eather.

Mild steel will absorb more energy in an impact, right? From what i understand, this is the reason Nascars must be built from mild steel. I don't think it's that chromoly will bend, but that it will "bounce" off the wall rather than bend like mild steel and absorb more of the impact. Think of it like running into a brick wall compared to running into a dirt wall....

Your right .Mild steel is alot more flexable too.I used to race speedway bikes. And I thought I would be real trick and build me a frame out of chromemoly. It was almost half the weight and didn't handle for ****.It was so stiff that I could feel every tiny bump on the track.I used that deal a whole 1 time.

saying mild vs chromoly is vague.

there are literally hundreds of grades of each, who's properties vary greatly by manufacturing method, temper, hot or cold production, alloying elements, carbon content, etc etc etc.
