Where to buy Nylon Cheaply ?
I have 2 3" round by 1.5" high bushings to make for my Diff.
The problem is that a sheet thats 1ft x1ft and 1.5" thick is like $90...
Anyone know a cheaper way to do this ??

not sure what kind of nylon your looking for but online metals has 1' of 3" round natural nylon for $53. I dont now how much to ship but its a little cheaper than the plate. You know if it needs to be a particular kind of nylon (like a 6, or a 6/6, glass filled)?? If you do I'll see what I can find at work..

they raised the price a bit over the big book that i looked it up in.

part number 63396147 if the link doesnt work.
nylon is pretty damn dense, way harder than rubber motor mounts or even poly bushings by far.
if thats not enough - aluminum, brass, bronze and copper are all options.

Thanks!
I'm gonna try this.. Should be interesting how I turn it and then find a copper center pin.. I've never made bushings before so it should be interesting

nylon will cut like butter in a lathe, so youll be prone to cut at a high feedrate. restrain yourself, because it can jump right out of the chuck quite easily too.
high spindle speed, go easy on the feedrate. and drilling long lengths makes lots of heat. it will melt to the drill, so use a boring bar or drill with air blowing, etc. i dont know if you should use a lubricant for it.

I've had good luck making mounts using 3M windo-weld urethane. It comes in a caulk tube for around $10. It bonds well to steel, so you can make things like motor mounts pretty easily. It hardens to a very similar stiffness as stock Honda motor mounts, and I haven't had any durability issues in 4+ yrs on my racecar.

Looked again on onlinemetals.com and you can get 3" diameter x 1.5" length nylon for 8.88 each or Acetal (delrin) for $9.51 ea. Just got to pick the material and go scroll down to the custom cuts section. Still dont know how much shipping would be but I couldn't imagine it being much.

i love that stuff! you can easily smooth it out wet so it looks nice too. great to have around the shop
what exactly is the application we are talkign about here, with the nylon?

if you can use delrin I have some kicking around that might work, ill check sizes if you get back to me.
probably harder than Nylon, self lubing etc.... I use it to make sliders for motorcycles and bike knee pads
