Default slowman's Blog

Figured I would make a little blog for myself and anyone who cares to read about it.

July 1, 2002 - When I (well my dad) purchased my 1990 Honda Civic Si. Bone stock with ~137,000 for $1,575. A pretty good deal. I was only 14 at the time. I fell in love with it when I saw it. Then when we went on the test drive (me being a passenger as I was only 14) it fortified the love I had for it after seeing it. I knew this was the one. I couldn't believe I got a car. So I practiced clutch with it the same day we got it driving around my yard and constantly asking my dad to take me for rides in it! By the end of that week I purchased a CAI from saving up money from various events in the past! We took it to the track and my dad managed a 16.4 from it with a CAI. Haha.

After I got the CAI, a header was next. I purchased a 4-2-1 2 piece header from previous saving. I really loved the benefits that gave me and I knew I had to do exhaust, so I got a Flowmaster Import series muffler and mated it with 2.25 inch piping from the header back with a resonator. OMG it sounded like *** so I got a eBay fart pipe and it sounded much more like how I had envisioned it.

With the 3 basic beginner mods already taken care of at age 15, I began to look for more things to fill my need for speed.

Then I got a Crane D16A6 Stage 2 Cam for Christmas. I could feel somewhat of a difference. By this time I had my liscense so I took it to the track (as well as many many times before while I had my liscense) and it ran a 15.5 @ 90. So from just a CAI @ 16.4 to I/H/E and cam @ 15.5 I was pretty pleased and it pulled pretty good I thought... then I got a job.

When I got a job I could afford to get things like an EM Racing C pillar bar(bling bling), ebay coilovers (haha), and turbo.

Feb 2004: Yes I needed more speed and that came in the form of a turbo. I found a turbo off of a Ford Thnderbird, it was the Garrett T3 .60 AR. I purchased it for $25 not knowing the condition or whatever. So I got that, an HF exhaust manifold, DSM Blue Top 450cc Injectors, 1G DSM BOV, PVC Charge pipes (hey whatever works, right), etc etc and pieced together a homemade turbo kit. This thing really hauled ***. I couldn't believe the first time I felt the boost. It is so addicting, like weed or VTEC is. But this fun didn't last too long because that stock 100k+ mile clutch wasn't holding the added power.

So I ended up getting an Exedy clutch/pressure plate. It hoooked real nice and ended up giving me a 14.0 @ 100 timeslip. So let's see 16.4>15.5>14.0 @ 100. The progress of this little '4 banger' ain't too shabby at all! I never thought I would own a 14 sec honda at age 16, but I was living my dream.

All was fine and I would go almost every weekend to Indy just cruising/racing with my friends til one day in June 2004, my tranny decides to crap out on me. As I was driving home from Indy I see a bunch of smoke pouring out of the back in my rear view mirror. I was like oh crap the 150,000 mile A6 is done. So I take an exit and all looked fine under the hood I didn't see anything and the engine sounded fine so I kept driving home. I got home and took a better inspection of it with a flashlight. I noticed a considerable amount of wetness around my axles so I thought my axle seals went bad. So I take out the axles and replace the seals and re fill with trans fluid and its still leaking like a mother. I was so pissed so I took the tranny off again and gave it to my friend to rebuild at about the end of July 2004. By this time most of my summer was done and I was so bummed about not being able to drive my car AT ALL while on vacation.

So he takes a look at and inspects it and sees that the input shaft bearing stuck to the input shaft and spun around the tranny casing and mared the CRAP out of it. I saw it and couldn't believe it. Also one of my shift forks happened to be chipped so I was faced with buying all new parts or finding another trans and putting it in. I decided to go with the new trans so I found an H-T member (hawjboiz i think?) with one for sale in Detroit on Aug 1. So I took the trip up there and picked it up in early August 2004. Got home and let my friend inspect and noticed that the 2nd gear syncro was chewed up a bit so he replaced that with one from my old one and I got it back and was excited. So I put it in and went for a drive. On my way home it was EXTREMELY hard to change gears and started making a horrible grind sound. Oh it was pain to the ears. At this point it wouldn't go into gear when I got to the driveway so I had to push it up into my parking spot and i was about to give up! Very disappointing.

So I take off my trans again and give it back to my friend and he realizes he put one of the bearings on wrong and overnights the bearing and I get it back within a day. So I put it on, its just fine and i love feeling the boost again and my new JRC 6 inch FMIC i got while having all these tranny probs felt GREAT! Everything was going fine until.... I BURNED THE **** OUT OF MY THROW OUT BEARING!!

Apparently I didn't have my clutch cable adjusted properly and it kept riding the throw out bearing so when I took the trans off there wasn't even a throw out bearing there. It completely melted and my pressure plate was fawked. So I wasn't going to play games this time and got the ACT HDSS Clutch/Pressure plate. I adjusted the cable myself, had my friend check it, had my dad check it and had my dad's friend check and they said it was allrite. So now I was smooth sailing, only took from June 4 - Mid September 2004 to fix my tranny probs, god damn i hate transmission!!

Took it to the track a bunch this past Fall 2004 and best time was 13.9 @ 105 mph. I was very impressed with the HP gain (MPH) from the new clutch and FMIC. Now traction is even more of a problem. I can't hook for crap in 1st and 2nd.

December 2004: I got a brand NEW turbo for Christmas! Same size: T3 .60 AR. I put it on and it feels better. I got this hoping to cure the smoke. Well it still kind of smokes and it has to be my engine internals unfortunately. I am anxious to run it at the track when they open up again!!!!!!

So as it is now, it's more of a car then I ever thought it would be, going from 16.4 at age 15 to 13.9 @ 105 at age 17 now. And the 90 Civic Si has turned my dream of owning a great Honda into a reality and hopefully my passion of working on Hondas into a career someday after HS.

As for what the future holds, IDK. I will see what it runs this spring and after that IDK. Either new pistons/rings or I will sell it and move on, but for now it's my life and I love it. Paintjob coming soon as well! It's funny seeing the look on people's faces as I pull away from their M3s, SRT-4s, Z28s and other cars like that. It's really a blast and I hope you enjoyed reading this if you did and expect more as things happen and pics to come sometime but I'm tired now

I like how everything was purchased by you
except for the car but thats okay. Why sell it and move though if it brings you so much joy? I would rebuild it.

Don't really know, just wanted to do something. And the pics are photoshopped enhanced it actually looked pink in a lot of areas. Just another chapter in the car's life, and chapters always end

I'm still wondering why you didnt just leave the stock paint on and buy some wheels, the car looked great as it was. Now, its spraypainted black with bullshit hubcaps...I don't get it?

Why does it matter? I think these hubcaps look better than seeing the steel wheel. Oh well your car is slow, mines fast. That's what matters to me... how fast it is not if people wanna buttfuck it.
