Default rust removal

i was thinking of buying this 93 civic hatch but there is a slight prob.

its got rust on the rear panels. its not like all over the place, its just a small amount over the rear bumper but its on both sides.

my question is how hard is it to remove this rust and about how much is the cost to have it removed at a shop?

any advice is greatly appreciated

Probably much more than the car is worth. Just the rear 1/4 panel part may end up costing more than it's worth. There's also a ton of labor involved, and I know alot of body shop guys don't even like to do it.

rear quarter panel is tough because if its real bad it requires cutting some of it away and welding pieces of another one back on. if it were fenders, doors, or bumpers you could always buy new ones and it wouldnt be a big deal. talk to a body shop before you buy the car.

to get a rather large dent out my pass rear 1/4 and to fix the rust that has appeard from the paint being chipped off and getting it repainted ran me 1200 bucks.. Depending on your rust will probably be the biggest factor.. Is it all the way thru or is it something sanding and painting will fix.

on one side its not too bad some sanding and bondo should take care of it, its just on the driver side that i see its kinda bad,
its probably in a 5in by 6in space but you can clearly see its all the way through.

so would i have to cut and weld in a new piece?

That's the only way to properly fix it, yes.

not to jack your thread but i have the same prob...but my rust is on the inside of the quarter panel in the trunk just above the wheel arch..i gave it a nice thump to see if it weakened the metal but it was still sturdy...could i jus sand that down w/ some regualr sand paper (not sure what grit to use) and just spray some rustoleum over it...oh if u looked at the car from the outside u would never know its there.

you could but that ain't gunna work for ****...

sand it, use an acid wash and proper top coat.

same hold true for the original poster if the metal can be salvaged. then do your body work and paint.
