My melted P28 ECM
If the failure is localized to that capacitor, I would assume an internal failure within the capacitor. If the circuit board is not burned too badly, it will be a fairly straightforward repair.

Good eye
If you have applied power to it, consider that chip smoked. The Mugen program is generally junk anyway.
I usually charge around $40 to reconstruct the PCB when there is a burn-through.

lol
thats a DSM issue with bad caps.
I think you just have a bad caps, of course it might be worse because the caps leaked around the circuitboard
replace the caps, it's 3 bucks most and then see what happens!

eh?
I've had this chipped for almost two years now...
My LsVTEC was hitting 14 sec 1/4 miles in my full interior coupe with a/c, ps, and on street tires with this chip "upside down"
Like to see how it would run with it "right side up"
I've been pretty happy with the mugen chip considering I don't have AFC or VAFC and the car lays down consistant numbers.
anyways, a honda tech here said the only wires going to this capacitor were the ground and main power supply....
So, wouldn't the fusable links blow near the alt first before my ecm fries?
guess not is the answer! lol!
As far as selling it...probably.
I' getting a new chipped ECM then I'm gonna try and fix this one and see if it works, then I'll prolly sell it.
DUDE!! same thing happen to my ecu!! so what do i need to do to fix this problem?? im running lsvtec too with p72 chipped and i try diff ecu p75 chipped and same spot melted dont know what to do! help please

That's weird becasue it's facing oposite of all other chips. Plus, look at the white outline around any of the chips. They are all rectangular with that C at the end.. kinda like this..
-----------------
|..................C
-----------------
The chip should match the white. I put dots in the pic since I couldn't use spaces (GRR HT)
And notice how that's the only chip facing that direction.. Even the letters on your chip are upside down. Was it already chipped when you bought this?

i dont think it cause of that..chip facing other direction mine was facing the right direction but same thing happen to mine ill pose pix later today

UNLESS the chip was programmed backwards... then, backwards=correct.

this might be VERY BASIC soo basic its too dumb to think about it.
but the little 1/2 moon or cresent shape thats on the MUGEN85R e-prom chip, its facing the wrong way.
I.E. Its in backwards
i had the same problem (smoking ECU) my problem however i had the intake temeperature sensor and the throttle position sensor miswired and consaquently (R135) on the board "fried" the car still runs...runs greats but that part of the ECU is toast.
i think your might be gone

electrolytics are getting old in honda ECUs they are dieing more and more commonly now.
Luserkid - Q30 pops when the EVAP and IAC are switched.
OP: If you're running with the chip that way then your CEL should be on and the car will run poorly compaired to having it in there correctly. It would also draw more power from the 5V line which would put slightly more strain on that cap... see where I'm going with this?
But the specific fuel and ignition maps of the limp mode in that ECU may happen to line up to your setup... it would be super lucky, but maybe.
