I am installing a DC Sports header, and am trying to take the stock header off of the car (B16a3) the only problem is that the 12mm bolts are stuck on...I've tried WD40, tried that PB stuff....and they still won't come off....first question is...is there an easier way to get these off? 2nd question is, is it ok to drive the car without the heatshied until I get this resolved?

 

Keep soaking them in PB Blaster...are they stripped or just rusted/tight on there?

It's fine to drive without a heat shield...you won't have it on when you put the DC header on anyways

 

I think they are stuck on there...but...they won't even budge....it's almost like it is stripping the socket itself. The bolts are starting to strip, but aren't stripped yet..one of the rachet connectors (don't know the term, but what connects the rachet to the socket) snapped inside the socket...and another socket is stuck to one of the bolts....this sucks

 

Dumb question but are you turning it the wrong way? I've done alot of header changes and never once was it too hard to get off.

 

No, I'm turning the rachet to the left...

 

do it when its hot and spray WD40 on it and make sure your turning it the right way

 

sounds like it's time for some craftsman ez outs.

 

use a 1/2 drive socket wrench...

I was having trouble getting some exhast bolts off and it was much easier when the car was warm.

I would try to loosen them while the car is warm/hot. Be careful not to burn yourself. Wear gloves if you have them.

 

Use a breaker bar of some sort..i use a 1.5 ft metal pipe...does wonders. I used it for my header install like 2 weeks ago.

 

What is a breaker bar? 1.5FT? I do not have that much room..thanks guys for all of your suggestions

He means to put a metal pipe over the handle on the rachet in order to give you more leverage (make the handle longer).

 

It's not that I don't have enough leverage though...b/c I move the rachet...and it moves like the bolt is stripped...but I don't think it is....if it is stripped, what would be the best way to get them off then?

 

You say the nut is turning with the ratchet? Sometimes the studs come out of the head with the nut still on it...this may be what you're experiencing.

 

Are you using 12-point sockets? They suck, they're good for nothing IMO. Sounds like you have cheap tools if the socket wrench broke like that too.

 

sounds like youre using 12pt sockets.
Try using a 6pt box wrench (in conjuction w/ a pipe for extension) and watch the stud as you turn to be sure its not also turning.

If you still cant get them off....you suck and need to take it to a shop

 

Use a box wrench like they posted..works much better. Put the wrench on the nut, put the bar over the wrench for more leverage and it SHOULD pop off.
