Default Engine Help

I need some info. I'm new to the whole honda scene, but me and my buddy purchased a 91 Civic SI hatch. It had the D16y6 engine in it, but came to a tragic hult when it became hydrolocked and threw a rod. Well we finaly found a wrecked car which was a 98 Civic 2dr which had the D16y8 engine in it. Well we pulled them both and used the SI Y6 exhaust and intake manifolds on the Y8 and swaped the trannys and distributors. Well we got it all bolted in and running good, and knoticed it had a significant increese in power. So I got to wondering what the specs were. I know the Y6 had a 6500 redine, but whats the Y8? Whats the Hp and Tq numbers and stuff? Any help would be aprecieated.

umm, i believe you're mistyping and mean A6 (D16A6) not Y6. If so... the big difference you're feeling is that the D16Y8 has a VTEC head rating the longblock at about 130(?)HP while the D16A6 is around an arguable 108HP.

It's also a newer engine so depending on what the older A6 went through it's going to be slower because of age and carbon buildup.

Also (this is only if you actually mean A6) you shouldn't have really used the intake manifold. The Y8 manifold flows much better and I know when people do upgrades on the DPFI older models they can take the Y8 mani over the A6 one because of the better flow.

Yea I didn't even think of that. Do you know if the VTEC is kicking in? If you're not sure def look into it... you maybe missing out on some power capabilities.

Yeah, your right, it was the A6. So about this vtec... what exactly is it, and how do I hook it up. Because I diden't splice or run any new wires, just used the old harnes and stuff. And does that mean this engine has a 7200 redline? Sorry Newb here.

to get full real power out of that motor, you need to convert your car to obd1. Get the conversion harness and a p28 ecu..(out of a Civic ex/si or del sol Si) and run the vtec wires and the 4 wire o2.. You will also need to use the Y8 dist. and change the plugs on dist. This car will run twice as good....

or cheap crappy way of rpm activation switch( wouldnt recommed it)

quick off-topic question but I saw that you swapped trannys. Did you use the y8 one? If so, did you use hydro-cable conversion kit? Just curious.

I'm half thinking of goin to a yard and picking up an engine for my swap. Cheap and cheap.

if your just gonna do a D series swap into your EF...stick with the cable SI tranny...Not worth the money to convert for just a d series.. Now if your gonna go to a b series...thats a different story...
