Default Filtered my engine oil...found some flakes...

Ok..I dont want to jump to conclusions yet...first thought that comes to mind is bearings

I had a guy at my work look at the flakes (was a Honda technitian for 5+ years) and he said it does not look like bearing material...but he didnt know what it was.

Basically the flakes look like very small dried paint chips (like off a old piece of painted wood) The were orange in color..not brown/copper (like a penny)...but an orange/ bright gold color. Did not appear metalic at all...looked JUST like paint.

Anyway that it could be paint of the ITR outter valve springs? Those are painted yellow though...

sgT? anyone else with some ideas?

sometimes people use copper spray on the head gasket. makes copper flakes.

otherwise i would think bearing.

I have never seen any flakes in my oil before. <shrug>

Nope, didnt use any copper spray.

*sigh*

I changed the oil and will drain it again in 500 miles and see if there are more flakes.

Could be from those FRAM oil filters.

Maybe your pouring in contaminated oil or your drain plug is real fucked up <scratching head>

Well when my bearings converted to flakes in the bottom of the pan they were copper/gold on one side and silver in the other, that was the coating from the bearing. If they are metallic, I would drop the pan and see whats in the screen and the bottom of the pan. Mine had lots of goodies that didn't come out in the oil change. I'll see if I saved any samples

I would think they are paint flakes from the valvesprings, I found the same residue on my oil pick up screen mesh , they were imbedded. When I removed by ITR valvesprings there was very little paint colour left on them, so I do believe the paint flaked off.

if you're worried about it just check all your bearings. take off your bearing caps and main caps and visually inspect them for damage. this shouldnt really take that long and it will give you an opportunity to retorque everything. Not knowing for sure is almost more nerve racking then really screwing something over.
