Can anyone please help me with this problem I have with my Honda CRV?

I bought a brand new Honda CRV Sports in May 2004. Initially, everything was fine. Since Dec 2004, the engine started to make a low whistling noise when the car is doing 2500 RPM constant. It does not make the noise at any RPM but only when the needle points at 2500 RPM. Current mileage is 3500.

I have recently taken the car into a Honda Service Centre. A mechanic sat in the passenger front seat as I drove around to demonstrate the noise. He heard the noise and explained it as a "normal accelerating and de-accelerating noise". He did not conduct an internal examination of the car.

I am not entirely satisfied with his explanation. At 2500 RPM, I am neither accelerating nor de-accelerating. I am driving at a constant speed, so where does this noise come from? I am also beginning to hear a little whistling noise when the RPM is below 2500 every now and then.

Is the car having a real problem or about to develop a real problem?

I am planning on taking the car to Europe where I will be driving through 3 countries doing 2000 miles round-trip. I would hate it if the car breaks down.
