Whistling/whining/almost a supercharger noise at various RPM
I've got a 99 Civic with the D16Y7. Just today I noticed a new noise. At various RPM (seems like somewhere around 3k and then again somewhere around 6k) I get this WheeeEEEEeeeep noise. It raises and lowers in volume (slightly) dependent on how hard I am on the gas, and I get a much quieter version of the noise on decel.
It sounds like it's coming from the driver's side of the engine, so I assume it's something to do with one of the accessory belts. Before I have to go yell loudly at the belts and try and find a dying bearing, is this at all a common problem?
If anybody's got a suggestion on the most likely place to look, I'd be a lot happier than randomly tearing into it trying to search for a noise.
I found a mention of what sounds like my exact problem here:
http://www.8thcivic.com/forums/civic...ing-noise.html
And a few mentions on this forum, but nothing quite definite (and no updates by the OP).
e: I have managed to make the noise while not moving as well, although only once or twice. It also seems to start happening once I've been driving for a bit.
ee: Long time later, discovered the problem actually was the timing belt tensioner. replaced it, problem gone.

Start your engine until it's at operating temperature (you can drive it around the block for faster results). Then pop the hood and pull the throttle cable and try to discern where the noise is coming from. Though it certainly sounds like the tbelt tensioner.
