Default Rocker arm nuts fell off!

I replaced my head gasket but hadn't done my valve adjustment yet. I took the car for a test drive. When I opened the valve cover up again to do the adjustment, I noticed that like 10 of the rocker arm nuts had fallen off. I managed to locate like 4 of them since they were just sitting by the valve springs, but I can't find the rest. I have been trying to use a magnet to get the others. No luck. I am assuming that those nuts in the head can cause something to break if I try to drive the car. WHat can I do? How can I get them out?

I've never heard of that happening before. I was suggest not driving with nuts just sitten there. Have you found the other 6 nuts? If not they could be sitten at the bottom of the oil pan.

Not sure if they are small enough to fit down the oil passages, probably sitting at the bottom of the oil pan right now.

Ok, I'll try that and give an update a little later.

Yeah, just was looking at a d-series head I have laying around, and if the oil passages are anywhere near the same size, its definitely possible the nuts fell into the oil pan.

I found four in the oil pan and one on the windage tray. I haven't found the sixth and last one yet.

Did you do the initial valve adjustment properly.. Also did you tighten down the adjusters enough?

The initial adjustment was done by old mechanic. I'm guessing that the adjusters weren't tight enough and is the reason why the nuts vibrated off. I gotta fine that sixth nut. It could anywhere.

Ive seen theis happen a few times......Pull the oil pan. They went through the oil passages, and are at the bottom of the pan.

Yeah, I've dropped valve keepers in the head while OFF the motor, and even when you think you saw where you dropped it, its still a pain in the *** to find. Poking around in the head again sounds like a good idea, hopefully you find it.

I've poked and poked and haven't found out. I even took the cams out and looked under the rocker arms. No nut. I kinda swiftly check the oil I drained out but didn't find it. I dunno where it could be. What is the worst that could happen?

it gets lodged in an oil passage which results in low oil pressure causing your bearings to over heat and spin...this will cause the rod bolts to break and the rod cover to fall off then the rod will shoot through the firewall and impel you....

you said the worse

just keep checking...pour the oil through a filter thing (like a net wth small small holes n see what comes out.

Well, that's good . At least I'd be able to see that coming. I was afraid it might get caught in the line of fire of a valve and cause instant damage.

that can happen as well. theres a piece of metal floating around in your engine....its most likely in the head. if its not in the oil. dude u check all in the oil pan? maybe its under that little edge thing n stuck in there....check in the oil u took out again.....check EVERYWHERE lol
