Default Speedo Cable off, Vtec not cutting in?

Guys,
I was tinkering away on a different Civic to my own, stock VTi with the B16a engine. In a fit of stupidity, I removed the speedo cable (within the engine bay) and accidentally broke the end of it.
Now when I drive the car, there is a warning light and the VTec cam doesn't seem to be cutting in at 5500rpm. I tried it twice, but I've haven't gone over 4000rpm since in case I damage the engine.

I've already got a new cable on order, should have it fitted tomorrow, but I'd just like someone to confirm that this IS what's causing the VTec cam's inactivity! Hope its not something else ....

Yep,
One of my freinds did the exact same thing. After he fixed the speedo cable, he was back in buisness.

speed is one of the factors allowing vtec to activate.
