Default Questions for H-T members......Please comment

Has anyone or Have anyone buy heavy or big car parts or Acura/Honda engine from CANADA? If you do, did you ever have to give them your social security number to them in order to get your item shipped to you? my friend recently bought a Honda engine from a shop there and the sales rep there ask him to provide them with the social security of his, In order for the shop to ship out the engine to U.S. land. The guy there said that it is require by the U.S. business system or somethang.... Please comment if this is safe or not / if you encounter something of this before?

Sounds like BS to me. The government recently passed a law saying you don't have to give out your SSN for many things...like a driver's license.

Thanks, I'll tell a friend that. I hope it won't cause him any trouble.

We don't have social security numbers in Canada so how would someone from Canada use it to steal someone else's identity? Unless that person has dual citizenship or something. Im sure that rule is there to make sure a Canadian company doesn't sell something to the wrong person. Just a thought.

Items entering the US from Canada-MUST- be declared at the border when it comes to business deals. I did one where the item came to Canada from Japan and then crossed over via UPS arriving at my door after US Customs released it. Yes it is a genuaine Honda part and the dealer NEVER asked for anything other than my shipping info-he got an International Money Order and that is all he needed. There are companies that act as your agent at the Border for these deals. You will not be asked much of anything except to pay them for the service they provide-paperwork.
Someone up there is playing with you and not in a good way IMO

Import documentation has a place to enter SSN or tax number for businesses. That's why they are asking. What they don't realize is that it does not need to be provided, to my knowledge. But it's on the customs docs...
