i drive a 97 civic EX, and lately, i've noticed that when i accelerate, around 1-2k rpm's... theres this whistling noise, almost identical to that of a boiling teapot... its OBNOXIOUS... it'll go away, then come back, get real loud and cut out... come back, cut out, etc., its so annoying... it seems to have gotten a little worse as well-- its almost like metal rubbing metal... its just a high pitched whistle... im thinking like a pulley or belt? what should i do? or what do you think it might be

 

have you tried to listening for the sound with the hood open while someone revs the motor while the car is in park? is the car throwing any codes at all?

 

yeah it's hard for my to pinpoint exactly where its coming from-- thats the hard part... nope, no codes... my car drives fine, its jsut this damn noise!!

thats what i was gonna say, but if he has the hood open, then he will hear it right away and know that its his cai....but he said it was hard to pin point where the sound was coming from.

 

Umm take out the tornado fuel saver thingy and throw it in the garbage.

 

just to be safe check all the hoses leading to and from the intake manifold, if you havent not done so already. its worth a shot. anyhoo..good luck man

p.s. it could still be your cai tho...i know those are known to "whistle" *shrugs*

 

1 to 2 k under light acceleration I really think its the cai
strange phenomonom my wifes car had the exat same setup never had a problem.

no i know what u mean about my cold air intake.... i have a whistle to that.... but this is obnoxious, its insanely loud, i think its somethig else.... ****

 

its not just CAI's i have one of those knock off j's on my C5, and have the same noise. you get used to it after a while.

 

did you go to oakland and have bub rub install a whistler tip in your exhaust, if so, go to http://www.ebaumsworld.com, under videos, u should find it

 

lol thats what it sounds like!! its THAT obnoxious, thats why im finding it hard to believe its my CAI.... its pissing me off

 

Mine wistles also.
Get a new intake if it annoys you that much.

 

no no, its not my cold air-- ive had a cold air for like a year... and this recently happened within like a few months... my intake whistles, i like the whistle... this sound is like a screech, sounds like metal rubbing metal...

i have a cai and there is no whistle, its just a sucking sound, vacuumish maybe

Same with mine. I have an AEM CAI.
