Okay well I am new to engine rebuilding having only a helms and some mild understanding from learning in class I want to try to rebuild my first engine.
Right now the cylinder walls are rust pitted so I know I will have to fix that.
How should I go about doing it? Bore it out? Resleeve?
If I do bore the walls out.. Can I use stock d16 pistons in there?
This is not a project block for performance this is just a knowledge block given to me for free.
Generally speaking how much do you think it will cost me to get the work done to the block (bore/resleeve)??
thanks

for the rust, i think a hone would clean it up pretty well
sleeving will cost anywhere from 800-1000 depending on the company you go with, once you ar e sleeving, you should send a piston with the block so they can bore all the cylinders out to match it

Shane,
Make sure that if you just do a finish hone on the cylinders you inspect the entire cylinder wall for pits were the rust was. If you decide to sleeve the block we can hone it to stock bore but I really would want the whole set of whatever pistons that you are going to use because it's not uncommon to mic a new set of pistons and get 4 different readings. So, send all 4 so that we can mic each piston and then hone each cylinder to the dimension of each piston and then mark the pistons as to which cylinder it goes into.

If you're just building this for knowledge (good, cheap, non-performance motor to do it with too) you can just buy a honing stone which you connect to a drill and you can hone it yourself. That will probably get rid of the rust.
It will probably cost around $1000 to refresh it, when you count in all the parts (gaskets, bearings, rings, t-belt, waterpump, etc.) and machine work (decking the head). You might be able to do it no problem just following the helms, good luck!
