Default [helical] LSD v. open diff driving feel

I just installed my Quaife LSD, but it seems that I feel the tires sliding more than before. Is that because the torque is transferring to the wheel w/ the most grip and I'm feeling the tire trying to grip for traction better? It just seems to me that I feel the tires slipping more than when I had the open diff...

Maybe it's because of the effect that both wheels have on the car when they lose grip vs. only one losing grip. How was that for stating the obvious?

Seriously though, with only one wheel losing grip, the other wheel is providing a significant amount of stability which isn't there when both wheels break loose simultaneously. I've felt the same thing, and that was all I could figure out.

Strait line, or cornering? NOS, or without?

strictly on cornering, and no N2O supplements...

If you want both wheels to pull get out the wire welder like I did. Oh yah, add power steering , and stay off the streets. This is a solo 2 car. It is now a two handed Honda. Note: this is not for "ricers" , or the faint of heart.

HAHAHAH!! You welded your diff??? And you find it turns _BETTER_ at soloII? Generally I would expect if you welded your diff closed, on a course with tight turns like autox generally has, you'd see a lot of understeer.. the inside wheel travels a shorter distance than the outer wheel, and the difference is more pronounced on tighter turns.. if you weld, the inside wheel _must_ slip to make it around the corner.. I've only heard of welding diffs in drag racing. Well, I've never done it, and don't know anyone who has.. who knows.. maybe it works..

DunReit, I don't know why you feel the wheels slipping more.. I don't know why you would.. do you mean slipping as in pushing? or slipping as getting no pull out of the corner? or both?

no, it's hard to describe the feeling, but i'm getting used to it and loving it! i've just been abusing my open diff for so long that i'm not used to feel the torque pushing the outside wheel... (rather than the outside wheel feeling like dead weight)

yeah, i noticed the same loss of traction when i put in an ITR diff in my gs-r. i figure that when the front wheels get too much gas, both wheels break grip, instead of the open diff just spinning the inside tire. i think the solution is to just not cross that edge of the throttle where the wheels break loose. you just can't floor it in turns like an open diff.

does this sound right?

Welded diffs aren't totally uncommon in road racing either, especially with old VW's. Requires a serious dose of gas and ***** of steel to stay on line.

a LSD for a fwd car will do wonders - just dont ask it to do something that it cant do. It will improve the way the car handles/corners, but there's only so much it can do. Flooring the throttle in a tight 1st/2nd gear turn will still make it push.

The beauty of a welded diff is when you go into really tight right hand on a solo 2 coarse, and the car comes up on the left two wheels it still pulls! Plus it's good for four or five style points. The worst part is the car trying to ripe the wheel out of your hand on turns. Then, after a certain point of rotation in the wheel, it takes the steering rack to full lock, so you have to slow it down. Like I said,"not for the faint of heart". I'm about to install power steering so that should make it more manageable. Keep in mind this car is about low budget and having fun. So low budget that it's going to the Grassroots 2002 Challange.

Right. With the quaife in the crx in 2nd gear tight corners in the wet, you can easily get the car to go straight ahead once both wheels loose traction with too much power. Even with the Type R in the wet in 1st gear turns once you pass a point after giving it enough power the car just goes straight and feels like both wheels are slipping. But if you use the gas properly you'll feel the benefits of an lsd working even more in the wet.
