Specs on Honda MTF?
5w30 motor oil (which is 75w80 gear oil weight) w/ some additives - not much in the way of friction modifiers.
It works well on the street and I used it in my street cars but if the car sees hard track use then look into something better - castrol syntorq, motul gear 300 (what i use... it r0x), synchromesh synthetic (not the cheap stuff) - all of them will be $10-$12/qt.

comparing motor oil to honda mtf is like comparing apples to oranges. as you can see in the virgin oil analysis there are some differences b/w regualr oil or mtf. honda mtf has more anti-wear additives (zinc, phosphorus) than regular motor oil. GF-4 motor oils cannot have more than 1000ppm of ZDDP, otherwise it will not be certified by the API. ot: amsoil is a motor oil that has a lot of ZDDP, therefore it is not api certified. you can also tell by looking at the voa's that regular motor oil contains friction modifiers such as moly and boron that are not present in honda mtf. these friction modifiers are supposed to reduce friction which may have negative effects on shifting.

hey i was wondering how good MTF is in the cold? I recently moved to another spot in canada, and the temp got down to -40C something here? Is there a winter edition of MTF, because I don't have a garage here for my baby. I suspect that the block heater only heats the engine, and not the tranny, because shifting is hard on cold days, but the car starts really well.

If you want something that meets the specs of Honda MTF, why don't you just go to your local dealer (Acura and Honda dealers both sell it) and buy some Honda MTF?

It's $3.95 a quart at A&H. How much are you expecting to save?

Sure, there are some other products, but they aren't really necessary for a car that's only street driven (heck, I track mine, and I still use Honda MTF) and they tend to be expensive, and they aren't sold all over the place like Honda MTF is.

yeah but how often do most people change their tranny fluid (most people, not you
)? I figure you should be able to find time to swing by a honda-acura dealer for mtf in advance. Can you find some of the stuff you mentioned earlier at any of those places? I don't think I'd try to save $ buy getting generic stuff from pep boys over honda mtf personally
-jeff, who gets honda mtf from Len and if he switches to Motul will buy it off the interweb

Around here, there are more Acura dealers than Advance Auto Parts stores. And more Honda dealers than Acura dealers.
I've tried Redline MTL and didn't notice any difference between that and Honda MTF. Except in price (Redline is more expensive).

well, at local dealer its much more than that.. if shipping doen'st kill the cost i might try that. i change transmission every 15k, but if something better available at same cost or less and no shipping, i'd go for that.
now, to get back on topic.. honda mtf is 75w80 and gf-4? right? anybody disagree?
