NDRA Turbo 4 Question
Do engine swaps that are already turbo (SR20DET -> 240SX or Sentra) count as 1 power adder or 2? This will determine how I build my car for this year. The rules are kind of foggy here, as it says Engine swaps count as one power adder, but what about turbo swaps?
Thanks!

This is more of a SCCA question but I am curious regardless. With those guys, you can put any engine into a car that any of the models in that line had as an option or standard equipment.. . that is, it is legal to put a 91 si engine into a 88 4 speed DX if you wanted to. or, it is okay to put the 1.8 liter miata engine into a 91 miata...
Along those lines - say you have a 99 EK hatch (originally equipped with a single cam, 1.6liter, non-vtec engine). if you put the engine from a 99 EX (single cam, 1.6liter, vtec engine) into it, is that a swap? what about the engine from a 99 si (dual cam, 1.6liter, vtec)?
it's completely obvious that putting a K series or a Prelude motor would be considered a swap, but I am inquiring for motors that come on certain models of the car in the same year/period... just a bit of grey area.
perhaps ndra would consider a "swap" to be an engine that also requires a transmission change?
again, i have no intentions of running my EK hatch in the ndra, as that duty is saved for the EG. thanks for your time and hope to see you at the track!

Does he have to run the stock turbo on the swap engine or can it be upgraded to a bigger unit and not count as a power adder?
If you made it to where upgrading the stock turbo counted as a power adder that would seem fair. Just my thoughts

Where does the NDRA draw the line on what is and is not an engine swap? Is it similar to SCCA type rules, where as long as the engine was available in the chassis it is legal, or what? What about block swaps, like a b20 block into a Integra GS-R or head swaps like a type R head onto a LS integra? Do these engine modification's count as power adders? It seems the rule book is very grey here...

interesting.
Well if they count a turbo upgrade as a power adder, then they would have to count everything as a power adder. I think it might just be the way its worded. But for the swaps, i think they should get penalized for 2 power adders. I say try it for a few races and see if it evens things up a little. But the prob with that is, if the civic guys have a swap and turbo, then if they wanna use nitrous they cant i dont think because they dont offer a 3rd power adder. So it might help the class stay closer together.
