Fuel Pump/Fuel Pressure. Just a quick question.
I'm having trouble trying to get the my 88 CRX going. When I hit the gas the engine doesn't rev up. It starts to cut out. The fuel pressure gauge is reading only about 12psi. So it's obvious that the engine isn't getting enough fuel. When I turn the key to the on position I can hear (a high pitch whinning) the fuel pump turn on for like 2 seconds and then it cuts out. It has a stock fuel pump in it. Does anyone know if that sound is suppose to keep going, letting you know that it is working properly or if it's suppose to cut out after a few seconds with the key in the on position?
If the fuel pump is working properly what else could be the problem? Any feedback will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

It's supposed to run for about 2 seconds then stop. It'll start again when the engine's running. Some kinda safety law about the pump has to stop if the engine stalls, like in a collision.
I don't know what pressure the CRX is supposed to have, but 12psi seems really low... Maybe 30 or more? So check the filter & the FPR. Normally the pump just quits working completely, then you'd get zero & the engine wouldn't even run.

Thanks! If the fuel pump is suppose to be like that then I think it might be that the gas level maybe too low. Do you think that this could be the problem too that's causing the gauge to read such a low pressure? The gas gauge is reading halfway between a quarter and empty.

That shouldn't make any difference. But it's SO easy to fill the tank & rule it out as the reason.
If filling the tank makes any difference at all, then I'd guess it's the fuel pickup in the tank. It's supposed to suck gas from the bottom, but if it's bent, broken, or has a leak, it'll suck some air instead.
Is there any reason to suspect there's crud sloshing around in the tank? In addition to the fuel filter, there's usually some kinda screen around that pickup.

I'll try to put a couple of gallons in it today to see if it makes a difference. If it does then I'll check out the fuel pick up lines. If it doesn't then I'll take a look at the fuel filter. Are those the only things that I should look at that could be causing the fuel gauge to read at such a low PSI? It was reading at around 37 PSI before this whole incident.
Well, if you can't find any reason, then you start looking for stuff that's more rare. Like maybe your gauge suddenly broke? Pinched/dented fuel tubing under the car?? You gotta check out the more common stuff until you find a reason...
How about the FPR??? Make sure there's no fuel in the vacuum hose. Then if you can pinch the return hose, does that put the pressure back up? If so, your FPR is shot.

LOL! That was the easiest fix ever. All it required was GAS! Like you mentioned there's probably something wrong with the fuel pick up on the tank. I'll have to run it dry and check it out again. At least I know now what happens when it's low on gas and where it'll start to cause the same problem.
Now on with messing with the idle fluctuation.

On the fuel pump note.. sorry if this is a double question but i cant find it anywhere on this site.. but im going to swap a b18c into my 90 crx and i just wanted to know if my stock fuel pump will pump enough fuel to the bigger motor? Or will i have to get a pump from a 90-93 teg? Im pretty sure that it will be ok but i just wanted to know if anybody knows for sure.. Thanks
