How do you know vtec isn't engaging? If your'e going by a "popping" feeling you are never going to feel it, because you just can't on a stock sohc vtec engine unless you change the engagement point or drop in a higher profile cam. The difference in sound isn't nearly as noticeable as a dohc vtec engine either. The sound is smooth and gradually changes tones, unlike dohc which does so suddenely.

Turn your car off and unplug your vtec solenoid.

Bring a hot wire from your battery to the VTEC solenoid plug and see if the solenoid clicks, if it clicks the solenoid is good. SOHC VTEC's dont engage like DOHC VTEC's, duh.

stock vtec engagement on a stock d-series sohc vtec engine is not supposed to "kick" or "pop".

It glides into VTEC.

Why are you asking if you already know how to do it?

The reason why i know is not ENGAGING is because i would go and shut off my car and disconnect the vtec solenoid and try it out and it runs as it was before. But i will try bringing a hot wire to the solenoid and try that to see if the solenoid is bad. Thanks for the help everyone.

Wire up a mad awesome light to your VTEC solenoid and put it on your dash. The light will come on when you're poppin' VTEC in some ricer's face and you'll know it's working!

Yeah, I drove a VX last night. VTEC on single cam's do not engage like a DOHC as far as VTEC goes.

How embarassing is this:

When I first got my VX, I thought that I was hearing VTEC engage. It actually turned out to be my ISB in my transmission screaming at high RPMs. Needless to say the ISB exploded a few months down the road and there was no more faux-VTEC sound...only a demolished transmission.

Is this question for me? I did rewire and don't have any issues. I did a writeup on the knowledge base on how to rewire.

My mitake i misplaced a number its D16z6 and the shell of the car its a VX the engine came from a Del Sol. And the engine that the car came in it was a D15Z1 Vtec-e. And yes i did take out the oil yet between cylinders 2&3. And i recently just checked my celenoid and it clicked when i put a hot wire to it. Please if anyone else has anymore recomandations please let me know.
