CA Bay Area people: CHP Inspection for BAR
Hey fellas, just a quick queston.
I have been trying to get my CRX BAR certified, but have encountered a problem. The 2 closest CHP stations to me (Dublin and Martinez) are not helping. AT ALL. One station tells me to leave a message on a machine; while another guy told me "What!? Where the hell did you hear that?" when I asked him about needing to get my car checked out by the CHP. So nobody is helping me. I have even left a few messages on their machines to at least call me back. Of course no one is calling me back.
So my question for you Bay Area people is, where did you get your cars checked out by the CHP? I need to know, because as of now I am surrounded by a bunch of dumb Fockers.
Thanks guys

i thought all you need to get your car BARed is to get it to pass the ref. as far as i know you only need the chp to check out you car if your getting it off a non op slip.
I think that they want you to visit the Ref, unless they said they wanted a chp to inspect it.
Did They give you a ticket to visit the Ref?
call 1800 952 5210 for a ref appointment.

I was on non op while I worked on my crx and I went to the dmv and told them I wanted to register my car as operational. They just changed it.

Thats weird. When I called, they asked for my phone number or zip code and then told me all the places in my area that would do BAR certifications. None of this "gold shield" stuff.
Yeah they asked for my zip, and then they gave me a couple places nearby. But when I called them, they said they didn't do it?! So **** the shops near me, I'm gonna have to go elsewhere to do it I guess. What shops did you guys go to, and what was your experience with them?
Thanks man

Dude, for engine change verifications you need a BAR ref. Call 800 622 7733 for an appointment. If you get a citation 27156 or 27151 or 27150 from a cop or chp call bar ref for an appoinment. Most test only guys wont touch a car with an engine change with out the bar label.

read up on the REF station review thread. Never heard of any "Gold shield" crap. I went to Skyline College in South San Francisco and didn't have any drama. Its best to got to a REF station that is knowledgeable on swaps. call the 800 # and get a list of stations and call them yourself.

Alright, thanks everyone you guys were helpful. I got another number out of that other thread, the 1 800 622-7733 number. Unfortunately, it is a holiday and they are closed but I will call tomorrow instead.
Again, appreciate the help fellas. I'm shooting for the station all the way up in Sacramento, since they seem to be pretty cool.

you only go to a gold shield station to get your car repaired after you fail a ref test...you need to go to the ref first....there was one at my old school seuoia institure in fremont...
Alright here you go.
From the BAR inspection Manual
1.11.9 Vehicles that require a BAR referee labels
"Vehicles with engine changes that do not match the original equipment manufacturer configuration for engine and chassis emission control equipment."
Since the 1.8 was not originally available/installed in your make of car you need a BAR label.
I hope you have all emissions for that engine on it.
And the number I have for scheduling a ref app is 800-622-7733
And there is a cost associated with this.
I work at Smog King. A test only in San Ramon. I will be glad to help you with anything I can WITHOUT being illegal. Take care.
