As far as I know it's just to help clean out the oil from your PCV fumes before they go back into your intake charge. This helps keeps things cleaner, prevents oil from dropping your octane, and keeps more O2 in your intake charge (a little more power).

^^ #1 reason, especially important in FI applications, decreased octane = possible detonation. Catch can catches the blowby fumes/vapors.

 

IF you can find a good deal on one then grab it. There are some nice pieces that are not only functional but show pieces as well.
