i have a 5th gen base with about 97k miles on it. i was wondering if there is any way to improve the miles per gallon of it. i usually drive conservatively and shift at every 10mph intervals. i dont know for sure how many miles i get per gallon, but i have calculated about 240 miles on one full tank of gas. any help would be appreciated. sorry if this topic has already been discussed.

 

get an engine management system such as hondata or aem and raise your compression with type s pistons. then have it dyno tuned. intake header and ehaust will help also along with a light weight flywheel and wheels.

 

240 for a whole tank? sounds low for "conservative" driving, what type of gas are you using? and mods? stay out of vtec and your gas will last.

 

Use 91 gas only, not 92 or 93 or 94, and get a tune-up you are getting really crappy gas mileage. The prelude has a 15.4 gallon tank, at the rated 22/26 (27?) even in city driving you should be able to hit 350 miles.

My built/tuned motor could still get 27mpg...

when is the last time you did cap/rotor/plugs? plug wires?

 

Lighter foot will help, shift before 3100rpm

MILES PER TANK DO NOT MEAN ANYTHING, use your trip odometer to figure out how many miles you can get per gallon.

 

If it's still not acceptable after all this, getting a Civic may be your only option.

I been tryin to figure out why I can only get that much, mine is a 98 lude sh , with 67k mils on it... damn man, just this week my gas went out again... 220.... :\

i have headers, short ram, exhaust
i use unleaded plus (octane 89 i believe)
in my short three months of owning my lude, i've hit vtec once. i stay away from that thing because it eats gas. no, i don't race.

 

i took a trip with 4 people and a trunk full of **** i got 407 miles on a tank but i was outa my mind when the light went on i was in the middle of no where. (car was mostly stock).
But now i get about 250 to 300 on a tank of 92 oct.

 

just do a tune up, and some general maintenance

 

Holy crap, i got a tuneup like 5k ago and i still only get about 290 a tank!
Maybe its my auto though, that tranny is nothing but trouble.....

 

4th gen. run on 93 ocatane. i get like 200 miles a tank... drive pretty normal.. little heavy on the gas sometimes. average highway speed is around 60-70. local around 30's.. i have no idea where all my ****** gas is going. not in vtec most of the time ethier. somethins not tuned rite i think.

 

a few things:

1) best i've done is 302 miles out of my tank, that was 11.9 gallons of gas (you do the math) but i avg about 280 with a stock engine and i drive like a bat outta hell....sometimes i get less, sometimes i get more....hondas are quite touchy....oh yeah and i use 87 octane because i'm poor....put 91 in about once every other month

2) you'll get better mileage with better oil (right after a change, better brand, etc) among other things....if you're shifting every 10mph, i'd hate to be the guy behind you....cuz that means you're not getting above 2500rpm

3) i'm really not sure where 15.4 gallons is the size of the tank, when i'm on E with a light screaming at me after 11.5 gallons

the sooner i get to 5th gear, the lesser the sound, i didn't installed it, got the car with exhaust on, and my car is STOCK 5spd !

lol i have a greddy evo2 or an knockoff or something and its loud (i think). i shift fast too to avoid the sound. i might look for a quieter exhaust one day when i have money to spare because i spend so much on gas right now

I get 388 gallons per tank at fast highway cruising (4krpm), and my tank is 14.9 gallons... or is it 13.9 gallons on the fourth gen?

Joel, why is it that a higher octane will burn more gas?

 

You could start by using the proper gas for your car. You are using 89 octane...when 91 is recommended for the car...if the knock sensor starts pulling timing and changing fuel maps to compensate...it's entirely likely you're getting *** mileage. Buy the real gas, and let us know how it goes.

definitely.

octane too low = hot - detonation - engine compensates to shitty mode
octane too high = cold - unburnt fuel - no compensation just wasted gas

see that's the other side of the spectrum, which can be just as inefficient. Too much octane and your car has a hard time igniting the mixture, and will tend to leave more unburnt fuel, and resulting shitty performance, sluggish acceleration, bad MPG.

I remember when my VTEC was stock I ran 94 and I always had this hesitation every 500rpms or so under WOT acceleration. I ran it down to empty and tried a little experiment and bought 91. Problem never returned, then I looked into it and figured out what happened.

high-octane is all hype, they claim great mileage and performance, but it is only true if you can advance ignition timing and raise engine compression to take advantage of it.

You should always run the recommend octane, as the maps were designed for it, unless you have changed timing/compression to warrant it.
