welding galvanized steel onto mild steel
Hey guys, I'm building my own fmic..basically everything is done, I'm finishing up on my piping. Everything looks good and I just need 2 pipes welded and also add in an IACV pipe.
The problem is I couldn't find any IACV pipe 1/4" big in anything else other than galvanized steel. I need to weld it onto my charge pipe, which is mild steel. Now I was told by the person who is welding my i/c piping that he won't do galvanized steel. Is there any particular reason I can't use this? Need some info asap, thanks guys

it just lets off toxic fumes. you can either grind the galvanized coating off before you weld or weld it in a well ventilated area and try to suck in as little fumes as possible
we weld it at work all the time.most of the guys don't even bother getting the coating off.at home i use a wire wheel and it seems to work pretty good.

If your welder won't weld galvanized, he's a *****. There's no reason for him to be like that. Stainless steel is one of the most harmful things you can weld...and you don't hear anybody complaining about it. Fact is that galvanized is more likely to make you FEEL bad...while stainless actually puts out more harmful ****. I guess it's the difference in feeling bad vs chronic illness or disease.
It can be welded, and the posts put up so far are correct. I would suggest leaving it on there or sanding or filing it off. Grinding on 1/4" tube will make it thin fast.
