I agree the prices suck! I understand r&d, parts, labor, yadda, yadda....but I don't have to like it. I hate my stock exhaust put cant kick out the cash; unless I bought a dynomaxx.

just run a custom crush-bent exhaust with no resonator and universal muffler for a few weeks and you'll see why...

Get a Thermal Classic, it is about $450. Full stainless steel, none of that crappy aluminized mild steel.

yeah...it sucks that things are expensive!!
but don't be fool like me....I bought a cheap *** cat and it ******* doesn't work. I love when my CEL is on!! Luckily someone was smart enough to make an O2 simulator.

if something is cheap it generally means that the craftsmanship is poor, or the materials are poor. Alot of ppl say that you may only be paying for the name, but obviously the name got known for a reason(cause they make good products)

quickie:you won't be sorry if you spend a little $$$ on a nice cat-back

500 is cheap for a cat back. Especially when axle backs are in the range of 500-600

I think that the high price is/was created as industry standard. It probably doesn't cost much to make, but if XXX company made an exhaust at half the price compared to HKS, TANABE, GREDDY, ETC They would not be at the same high quality standard. It is the damn corporate swine. Trust me, look around.
Just spend the $500 for a cat back, or pay $500 for an axle back like the Mugen Twin Loop (What a bargain!) That is what I got.

supply & demand. If they couldn't get one person to buy it for that price they would have to lower it.

NO were getting srewed cause we drive imports. Look at any similar part made for a Ford, Mopar or Chevy and the price will nearly be half!! If it's made for a Honda or Nissan or Toyota expect to pay thru the nose for it!!

mine cost right around $300

2.5" press bent b-pipe $80 including labor
Apex'i N1 universal can (NA size) $180
parts and labor to put N1 on $45

total comes to $305 for an exhaust system that never gets smaller than 2.25"s and a tip that is 3.5"s

I had a custom 2.25" mandrel bent cat-back with resonator and stainless muffler that looks like the GReddy PE. It's sounds great, no tin can sound, and it ran me $350. Don't buy into the hype about exhausts.... there is no science in aftermarket exhausts, it's just mandrel bent tubing, resonator, and the muffler. The only reason why I would spend that kind of money on a GReddy, HKS, etc... is if I lived in California and have to abide by the CARB rules. by the way.... may car ran cleaner on the state inspection with my headers, intake, and exhaust then it did stock.

Cat-back's are not smog equipment therefore you can get anything you want in Cali even custom made. I have considered custom but Will be buying used.....I just wanted to complain about the damn cost.

Technically no, you can't. According to California Vehicle code.

Modification of Exhaust Systems
27151. No person shall modify the exhaust system of a motor vehicle in
a manner which will amplify or increase the noise emitted by the motor of
such vehicle so that the vehicle is not in compliance with the provisions of
Section 27150 or exceeds the noise limits established for the type of vehicle
in Article 2.5 (commencing with Section 27200) of this chapter. No person
shall operate a motor vehicle with an exhaust system so modified.
Amended Ch. 382, Stats. 1980. Effective January 1, 1981.

Import products cost more because the companies have so many input costs. Also, the companies know that the import scence consists of so many young people that we are willing to pay astronomical prices. (e.g. Polo clothing)

We might not like it, but there is the CEO of [insert favorite company] that has a large smile on his face.

You don't believe me? Why is that so many import magazines, shows, advertisements have some sort of sexual theme to it? HOW MANY PEOPLE DO YOU THINK GO TO HOT IMPORT NIGHTS TO LOOK AT CARS? It's mostly horny, pimple faced teenagers that go see the models. The companies have to pay the models (part of marketing scheme and therefore incorporated into total price of products).

However, 27150 and 27200 say that it cannot exceed 87 Db. And California doesn't have test equpiemnt to proove that you exceed that therefore you can modify your exhaust and still be safe.......I even got a ticket for the EX's exhaust.....was driving next to my friends FULLY modified mustang. Went to court and took the Judge outside and showed him my exhaust vs the mustangs......he threw out the ticket.

Find me ANY exhuast that AMPLIFIES the sound of your engine, and I will give you $100 dollars. Every exhuast system in existance with a muffler and resonator will not make the noise an engine produces louder!!

That law is bullshit.

Why not start looking around for a used cat-back that's in decent shape. I picked up my tanabe racing medallion for $220 from a guy i met on ClubSi. He even met me halfway so there were no shipping costs involved.

however all exhaust systems that we buy increase exhaust noise so that law ISNT bullshit.

I hate exhausts. Even the $500 dollar ones. I think Honda's sound better with just intake, but that is just me.
