Default Considering a 1987 crx si 160k, have some questions?

Hey guys I am gonna test drive a 87 crx si with 160k today, it was a seatle car but owner claims no rust. Anyway I now nothing about crxs so any info would help. First of what are the major drawbacks of the first gen crx, can i swap a gsr motor into it or not. What should i look for when driving it and thanks in advance!

GSR would be a TIGHT fit into that CRX. They make mounts to put a B series into the 1G CRX, but its just a small engine bay. B16 would be tight too... Just check for body rust and rust underneath the car. If you have quite a bit of rust underneath it, I would suggest to keep looking.

Check out http://www.RedPepperRacing.com. Very informative 1G CRX/3G Civic forum .

agreed. They just recently started(within 3 months) making it possible to swap more then just the D series motor in the 1g crx. It's a tight tight fit. So choose your parts wisely or you'll have to cut and weld and do all this nasty **** you don't want to do. B18c1 will fit....but like i said measure for your parts and clearance or you'll regret it. rust=suckage

I stand corrected! SCore for Hasport...

My 87 Civic Si with a B20/VTEC has been swapped since 2001. HASport

It IS a tight fit but well worth it!!!

Hasport mounts came out when I had my 84 CRX at least a year and a half ago.

B20/VTEC would be pretty nice in that car for straight line, but those cars won't handle near as well as they would with a stock motor, or even the D16A1...

It's generaly advisable to put in the thicker torsion bars to compensate for the extra weight... but since when are you supposed to drive BETWEEN the cones in a construction zone

Hasport mounts have been out since 00'. The B18C will work but you cannot use the manifold unless you modify the firewall, a skunk or JG manifold fit well. The B-series mounts are alot of $ but worth it. The D16A1 will bolt right up with the teg mounts and some minor changes to the wire harness.

These cars are great and as long as it is rust free buy it...you won't regret it.

forget a motor swap, did someone say bad *** CSP car? If there's a little rust, dont be too worried, the most important spot where you MUST MAKE SURE THERE IS NO RUST is where the panhard bar mounts to the unibody above the rear axle. If there's rust there, dont buy it. My 86 Si rusted apart there , luckily, my 85 Si has much less rust.

The biggest drawback is some lackluster aftermarket support, but it's there if you look for it. You have to be creative for some parts though (there are no aftermarket intakes, however, if you install an 92-95 Civic intake backwards, it fit's ).

1g CRX's are great little cars, if it's cheap and in decent shape go for it!! (and redpepperracing.com does kick ***)

enjoy,

Jacques

damn if this isnt the most ignorant statement evAr...
this past summer at a local SCCA sponsored auto-x my car WITH the B20VTEC ate every street car alive except for one HEAVILY modified STi. The sus includes Tokico Blue's and rear Ground Control coil sleeves, and upper strut bars.

They won't. Put the B20 in a STOCK 1g CRX, and it won't handle as well as a STOCK 1g CRX with the original motor. Also, I did not say it wouldn't be great at accelerating out of corners, I said that it wouldn't handle as well. Considering your car is not stock, then we can't really compare. Besides, why did you mention "street car"?

I agree, a B20 in a 1g CRX would be ok if the suspension was built for it, which obviously, your's is. I would like to compare a stock CRX Si to a stock CRX B20/VTEC in an autox event....

Best advice I've seen in this whole thread. As he said, you don't NEED a swap. If you want one, there are ways to do it. If you autocross, be sure you know the class and the rules before doing anything. It sucks to get "up-classed" for one little thing you didn't realize...

quite possibly the most ignorant comment i've seen on here. times 10.

too ugly in your opinion only. and trust me, you probably do stand alone in this.

[rant\ too old? welcome to the ef forum. where we have cars from 87-91. i for one have an 89..given its two years newer but its still a 16 year old car. If a 17 year old car is "too old" then EVERYONE in this forum has an "old car" The newest of our ef's is 91. Still 14 years old. I'm 17 years old. And my car is damn near my age, old car maybe. Great car, absolutely. /endrant]

My 87 completely stock engine sounds sexy, terrific pick-up, great handling and it looks a lot better than my 90CRX.
