The reason why the STD came with a four speed and the HF a five speed has to do with the purpose of each car. Specifically, the STD was made to be cheap. So it got stuck with DPFI, a four speed, vinyl upholstry, and a bare-bones instrument panel. The HF, on the other hand, was made specifically to be a high fuel economy vehicle. Keep in mind that the HF was NOT made to be cheap. And indeed, it was the CRX DX model that was considered to be most bare-bones (although it had more power). Therefore, the HF got MPFI, cloth upholstry, and an instrument panel with a tach. Also, it got a five speed. The interesting thing here is that gears 1-4 in the HF transmission are identical the gears in the STD transmission. The only difference is fifth gear in the HF. And fifth gear in the HF was a super-tall fifth gear. This was an addition made in the name of (what else) maximum fuel economy.
As for changing hub/knuckle assemblies, this is required on both the HF AND STD.
