i started dismantling my tranny in my 94 civic ex and i cant seem to get the cases to come apart. they split about 3/8 of an inch and thats as far as they go. i didnt wanna try and pry them apart or anything because i dont know if that will mess it up so does anyone have any hints? i took all the bolts out around the circumfrence of the tranny and nothing else seems like it might jam it up.

Did you open the snap ring?

yeah that damn ring can be a pain, even if you know about it.

 

where exactly is the snap ring located? I;m having this same problem.

 

its right behind the plug near the bottom right hand side of the tranny (if it was in the car). the plug has a square in it so you can use a 3/8 ratched to remove it and the snap ring is right behind it

Snap ring is a bitch!

Use some needle nose pliers to hold it open and pry open the case with screwdrivers.

 

i used a LARGE flat head screwdriver to spread the snap ring apart then pryed on the case with a prybar. i just split 2 trannies like that and seems to work good. i would have tried your method but i couldnt find a decent pair of needle nose pliers. either way works
