Put in 50 weight oil and I'm sure your engine will make noises much louder than vtec. Your rods will thank your bearings on the way outside of the block.

It's a lot quieter without oil

As stupid as it sounds I do remember a few posts in the past from people claiming that they changed their oil and vtec was louder. Personally, I think its all in their mind.

EDIT: I found this one

In theory, I think it should be quieter because of the thicker film of oil between moving parts.

However, on my B16a, I have experienced that, with the valve lash on the looser side, the vtec note is definitely louder and the transition into vtec mode is also more pronounced...big surge of power.

After tightening up the valve lash, the vtec sound is very muted and the car keeps pulling smoothly and strongly all the way to the redline without a dramatic power jump at the vtec engagement point.

The car was quicker by a tenth with the tighter valve lash.

i can see what u mean about the valve lash thing, when i put my itr cam in my motor i noticed when the valve lash was looser, vtec was louder, in my theory its because of the "looseness" of the valves and the clicking is just way louder in vtec creating a louder tone. when i tightened my valves it got a little quieter. and the motor ran way smoother, especially at engagement point.

Your friend doesn't know what he's talking about. As long as there's enough oil pressure to activate the locking pins, vtec will engage normally just like every other time. Changing the oil viscosity isn't going to make any difference in the vtec engagement noise increase. As stated above, thicker oil would only quiet things down (such as valve tap, not exhaust tone.) if anything.

Unless his locking pins weren't all fully engaging, changing the oil to a thicker viscosity wouldn't make any difference. Even so, a thicker oil probably wouldn't make a slugded up locking pin suddenly work again either...
