89 Prelude Clutch replacement help or tips needed
I cannot get my car into gear. It was getting progessively stiffer and then I was driving and all of the sudden it just wouldnt shift, I managed to get it into 3rd and drove home 3 miles in 3rd gear. When I got home and popped the hood could definelty smell that sort of 'burny' smell. I have my brother coming tomorrow to replace the clutch ( i am assuming that is what needs to be done)--he has done it numerous times on VW's--this is his first Honda clutch. WHat I would like to know is if anyone has some pointers--thinks to expect, to watch out for and parts that I should replace while I am in the the process (throw out bearing, seals etc)
Your brother will most likely not enjoy himself during this process being a volkswagon guy but check the slave and master cylinders before replacin the clutch. The problem probably lies in on of those two parts
We bled the system and readjusted the pedal and it is still not working. He is positive the clutch needs replacement. I was just hoping there might be somebody, anybody who has done it with a few pointers and such. thanks for the advice!
ok...ijust did mine, watch out for the speed sensor on the rear, its nearly impossiable to get to with teh tranny still in, so you are gonnna have to take it out just a bit then take off the speed sensor...
also while in there, replace the flywheel with a light one, the only one made for the 88-89 is fidanza, if you got a 90/91 ot 90/91 tranny you can use any b16 flywheel and clutch...
if you are 88-89, order a flywheel and get a clutch form...www.clutchcityonline.com get the exedy replacement, it holds about 5% more than stock so tehy say, but its held my headers intake exhause new cams and nitrous for over a year and a half...and its lighter than an old worn out one....its crazy how light it is.
so when you are in tehre hers a check list of things to replace
Clutch disc
Preassure plate
Throw out bearing (all 3 come in a kit from clutchcityonline)
Flywheel (replace it with a light weight one to free alot of power or just resurface your old one to go the economic route)
the speed sensor is the only tricky thing

excellent--thanks for th advice. We started before we got you reply so the speed sensor must have been thing my brother was refering to when he said -"what the F--- is this god---- thing? I guess it needs to come off" I got the exedy clutch kit in the miai from clutchcity--$169 everyone else had it for $207-225. If I bought it on the corner they wanted $254 plus tax--UGGGH! So we are doing the whole process broken up over a couple of nights. Everything had gone peachy so far--the old clutch was a mess! Thanks.
