Is a clutch master/slave cylinder replacement difficult?
I know the slave is a lot easier because its so accesible, but the master is a different story. The shop I just took the car into said the master is a "total pain". Is this neccessarily true? Im looking at my factory manual right now, and it doesnt look all that hard. Opinions?

It's right by the firewall and behind the clutch pedal.
You have to detach it from the reservoir and the line connected between the master and the slave cylinder.
Overall, not a difficult job, but a little messy. If you can replace the slave, I'm sure you can change the master.

the master is not that hard, probably take an hr for a shop to do it. just make sure you set the clutch pedal adjustment right cause when the car gets warm it will cause the clutch to slip.
its like an oil change if you have the right tools. Also... my sister came in handy since she has the thinnest wrists and could get the bolts off the lines and underneath the dash.
Thanks, I think Ill try and tackle this one myself per everyone's advice. The shop wanted $290 for parts and labor!

make sure you get a tool to bleed the clutch lines, otherwise it will take forever to get the pressure back up by just pumping the clutch.

KG is probably right, but I just used a small 8mm wrench and socket to bleed the slave cylinder. Anyhow, you need two people for this job when you decide to bleed the system...someone to press the pedal, and someone else to close/open the "bleeder-valve."
not necesseraly, i used a baseball bat. I would pump the clutch 20 times that keep it depressed on the 20th time with the bat, then run around the car let the bublles out and run back to pumping..... yeah I know ghetto but worked!

The cotter pin can be a little difficult, the rest is pretty straight foward.

I am in the same boat.. I decided to replace the master cylinder myself. Now that the new one is in, I am unable to build any pressure. The bleeder on the slave is closed (it was replaced around 1 year ago). I am not sure what else could be wrong. What am I missing?
Any help is appreciated!

Spounds like you need to bleed the air out of the system.

Is it expected to not build any pressure until the air is bled? When I push the clutch, it does not come back up. I have to pull it back with my hand.
Any other thoughts?

Sounds like a normal installation to me. Bleed the air out.

Thanks again guys!! I have sucessfully replaced my first master cylinder. It took around 5-10 tries to pull out the air enough to build pressure. After that, it took a few more pumps and it was good to go....
Thanks again!
Thanks again!
u ended up changing/replacing the master cylinder yourself?
i think its time for me to do mine aswell.....can you possible list the steps..

I need to replace my slave cylinder.... well i think
this is the problem..
couple of weeks back, my clutch lost all power,, wont work, all of a sudden, I find out no oil in the master cylinder.
add some to it.. dissapeared in a week...
today on doing research found out that the area near the slave cylinder.. the covering on it was storing the leaked oil..
anyways.. so need to change that.. any one have any idea how to do it? steps might help...

don't mean to bring this back from the dead, but I figure better a search than a repost...
As far as the master goes, is it a simple bolt and unbolt kinda deal? with the exception of the bleeding
because the master on my GSR is shot, but I have a donor car with a good master, just wanted to know if it's as easy as it looks (and sounds)
