I'm working on a 88-89 civic DX 4dr (DPFI). Friend of a friends car, not mine.
It doesn't want to start, but will crank over just fine. There is a wierd pattern when I try. It will crank, try to fire, sputter, then go back to cranking, try to fire, sputter, etc.
I've already checked fuel. I pulled off the intake chamber and watched the injectors both squirt. I've already checked spark. I checked all plugs and even pulled off the dizzy cap to make sure all points were intact.
At this point, I'm hoping to christ that the timing is all fucked up. If it's not, I don't have a clue what the hell is wrong. I was thinking maybe a faulty resistor box, but both injectors fire fine, so fine that a backfire has singed my eybrows and goatee.
I'm headed to Schucks right now to buy a timing gun. Anybody else ever encountered this before or have a clue what's wrong?

I dont think a timing gun is gonna do u any good considering it wont start. Since u said u pulled of the cap, im assuming u have done a visual inspection of the inside of the cap, the rotor, and ignitor connections? The only thing i think is next would be to check cam timing.

I've used a gun before, but the engine was running. I figured it would work in this situation.
