i got a little ambition after work today and took the motor and tranny out of my civic. it went pretty smoothly, considering its the first time i have done it on that car. i also pulled the head off since im gunna use it for my mini me swap. the reason i pulled it was because i spun a bearing sunday . anyways, i picked up a d16a6 and a tranny from someone on the site and im not sure what tranny it is. it has been painted and i didnt see any stamping on it. is there any way to tell? my ex tranny has bad syncros and i need to replace it but i dont wanna use one with some lame gear ratios. maybe i can make a hybrid tranny out of the 2? anyways, here's some pics. yea, i know its dirty, if you dont like it, come clean it.

the d16a6 im gunna use for the minime. i just pulled the head off, it needs to be cleaned up a bit obviously.

here's an update if anyone cares. i rebuilt the tranny (had a bad shift fork), rebuilt the d16a6, tossed the motor and tranny in the car, and slapped on the d16z6 head. so far so good except i cant get the timing belt on. any ideas? im using a z6 belt and an a6 tensioner and water pump. here's some pics.

 

I hope you used some assembly lube on that motor. Also why did you take it apart anyways???

What's the problem with the timing belt too short too long?

 

yea i used lube. i took it apart because i spun a bearing on my d16z6 and i wasnt about to toss in a motor without freshening it up a bit. i went with the a6 block because i got it REALLY cheap and i wanted a little more compression. the timing belt is too short

The A6 tensioner pulley's diameter is too large. You will need to step up one toot on the belt I believe. I've done it before, but I forget what belt I used. Have you tried the A6 belt?

 

you could try a DX timing belt it's a tad bit longer.

 

thanks jim. i couldnt get my z6 tensioner on the a6 block because of the different bracket that the spring clips to. im not sure if the bearing part comes off that bracket, i can check. otherwise ill try a longer belt.

well I know that DX is 2 teeth longer then z6, and vx is one tooth less then z6.

If you know that for sure, I think we have a winner. If I remember correctly:

VX- 103 teeth
Z6- 104 teeth
A6- 107 teeth
DX- 106 teeth

Please correct any inaccuracy.

 

DAMM that motor looks fresh, what did you do or use to have it so clean?

 

thanks man! i spent many many hours stripping every last part off and soaking every part in degreaser and scrubbing the **** out of them. when i was done, i put everything in this machine we have at work that shoots steaming hot water and soap out of jets and rotates. that pretty much got all the loose crap and degreaser off.

 

well i got her running and driving today. i ended up using a 106 tooth timing belt from a 94 civic dx like jim suggested. thanks alot for the advice, it worked perfect. car runs great, i did a little test run around town and everything seems fine. the idle was a little fucked up when i first started it but it has always done that. i need a new iacv and yes its been cleaned a million times.

are you using the a6 trans? isnt this eg+ forum? if its going into a eg then that trans wont work. not being a smart *** just tying to help

 

I think he rebuilt a z6 tranny and put it in.
