Last I heard they are doing it again in '05.
Let me know if you need a co-driver. I don't have any money, but I can bring along a team chef.

That's gonna suck if you only bring 12 hours of **** whoopin' and they decide that it's a 13 hour race again next year.

Good point...but with a stock tank and only about 10.5 gallons of usable fuel, we'll spend nearly an hour in the darn pits!

A 22 gallon cell would cut your pit stops in 1/2! I've considered it, but it'll cost at least $1,100 and I've already blown my winter '04 upgrade money

you've got to factor in the weight issue of 11.5 more gallons of fuel which = slower lap times...i think a pound of gas is = to 7lbs or so.

When we won the VIR 13 hour this year in the ITB Golf, the second place car was a BMW 2002 with a monster fuel tank and they could run 2+ times as far as we could on a tank but they said they definately suffered much slower laps due to weight. Add that to the fact that you need to be able to be sure that the driver and car could do 3 1/2 plus hours with no need for service or a break. That is asking a lot. They had the mondo tank but we won with the complete package and consistency.
In the ITS RX7 that I crew chiefed in the Moroso 24 and Summit 12 hour, we had a 25 gallon tank but that was because the thirsty rotary needed all that fuel. I seem to recall that only did 2 or so hour stints in it. If the car doesn't need all that fuel and may need a stop otherwise, the big tank can be a negative.

As Lee mentioned, you need enough gas to run about 2 hours and thats all. Anything more is too much weight and too long for us fat amatuer drivers.
Not only that, but the BMW Lee mentioned above had monster long pit stops trying to fill up that huge cell. Then they went out on track damned near dragging the rear bumper because the car was so heavy.
Nothing gained, actually this strategy likely helped them lose. All that extra weight caused them a brake pad change they hadn't planned on needing as well.
Team GTI - No brake changes, double stinted front tires, 2ish hour stints, 14 gallon fuel tank... Win by 3 laps over P2.

I'll agree, but stops every hour without a proper fuel rig are a big handicap. My car with a 22 gal cell would = 2 hr stints about 70 extra pounds during the first 1/2 of the fuel run.

I heard they were looking at doing it the first weekend in November which be the worst possible time because it's the same weekend as AARC so there would be no chance of any front running IT cars being at the event.
