Problem:
I got the amp and the sub hooked up and when I try to play music, the AMP gets really hot in a matter of seconds and the SUB does not work. Anyone know what may be causing this?


Setup:
95 EG hatch
Rockford Fosgate 900w Mono amp
Sony Explode 12" Sub 350RMS 1200 Peak
Rockford Fosgate 4 Gauge Amp kit
Some Aiwa headunit (not sure which one)

Side notes:

-At first i thought it was a bad ground because there was paint on the car where it is bolted down, so i sanded it down until i could see bare metal.

- The 4 Gauge wire is too thick to fit in the AMP so i had to cut some wire down to make it fit. I am thinking of switching to a smaller Gauge so that it can have a CLEANER fit.

- The AMP is used; bought it from a friend
- AMP lights up red ; I have been told it should be GREEN

when you have the sub disconnected does the amp get hot? Does it only do it when the sub is hooked up or only when you're trying to make the amp work (signal going to it)? If you have a multimeter check the resistance between the sub's + and - terminals. The resistance might be too low for the amp or you might have a shorted out voice coil. Some amps you can run as low as 1 Ohm. Hook a different sub or even a 6x9 speaker up to the amp and see what happens. If it plays fine your sub is fucked and the amp is protecting itself from frying.

maybe one of your wires wasnt connected right make sure you check all the wiring before anything and make sure you dont blow your amp, i would take it out and check to see whats the problem first

 

if your wiring is fine i'd say your gain is set to high (why it overheats) and you might have blown your sub....(thats why it dosent work) your sub is a singal voice coil sub so it runs at 4 ohms.... and that amp is able to handle 2 ohms... but nothing lower... so you can try lowering your gain alittle and still see if it overheats... and if there isnt any wiring problems with your sub... then your going to have to buy another one....

 

UPDATE:

Now there is a LITTLE bit of sound coming out of the sub, the sound is really faint, so much that you have to put your ear near it to hear it. The amp still heats up like usual.

I tried hooking up one of my old stock front speakers to the amp and the speaker just blew up LOL. I dont know what that means...

I got a small screwdriver and tried messing around with the GAIN but no luck at all.

I took the amp apart but could not find a fuse.

I have the same rockford amp except its 2400 watts and it lights up red when its on. It also heats up quickly but im guessing thats normal since it has no fan to cool it down like an audiobahn.

Have you tried hooking it up to a different sub?

 

Sounds like a blown voice coil to me. And I dont know about the newer RF amps, but the old ones you could fry eggs on.

And since you hooked up a stock speaker and blew it right away..........that means.........turn the ******* volume down, the stock speaker only needs a few watts to make some sound. You are trying to test the amp, not fry stock speakers.

 

Did you go and ohm out the sub like I suggested you do?

 

Hey, I have not yet do the Ohm thing.

My friend and I where testing the system out today to see what works.

First we tried putting his sub to my amp and the sub would barely play just like mine used to do.

Then we put my amp in his car and it could not power his SUB, we also put my SUB on his AMP and my sub did work so we know its not the sub, so it must be the AMP.

Conlusion: Im just gonna get another amp and get some smaller wires maybe 8 gauge and call it a day, hope everything works out.

 

BTW, you voided any warranty you had on the amp when you opened it up too.

1. Its a used amp i got from my friend
2. How are they gonna know?

 

Ok, you had no warranty anyways. They usually have a sticker or seal over where the 2 halves of the amp go together, so if its taken apart, the only way is to pull off the sticker or rip it, so either way they know you opened it.

Oh really, I think someone must of opened it before then because i didnt see any sticker or anything, i just removed the 4 bolts and the metal cover came right off.

 

well, u stated the fuse ISNT blown..

It could be u have some shitty *** RCA cables,
try hooking up ur friends amp and your sub in ur car and see what happens

is there anyway the rca cables could be bad? they are brand new Rockford Fosgate rca's

 

Yup, I've had bad RCA's right out of the box.

i dont doubt it, explain ur situation (after checking to make sure it really is the RCA's) then just be demanding and modest at the same time and they should work something out with u...if not just start flippin **** with them and threatening to return the whole kit...
